(10,072 posts)I am fed up with "us" hating on "them" and "them" hating on "us"
These are our fellow American's and and there are a lot of them. And they support Trump for all sorts of reasons.
Some just live in areas where "everyone" votes Republican, so that's what they are doing.
Some are stuck in the fox bubble.
Many are struggling. We cannot underestimate the toll being taken by inflation in rent and other monthly costs like auto insurance and health insurance. A lot of these folks are are voting for Trump because things suck and they think Trump will "shake things up." They want change for change sake.
Some are voting for Trump because they think those "blues" hate them, or hate their religious beliefs. They feel vilified and that feeling binds them together. And demonizing Trump and his voters only feeds those beliefs.
A whole lot of them don't actually pay much attention to the rallies or the speeches. They've got enough on their plates.
Perhaps take some time to talk to some of those "Reds" and you'll get a better feeling about what's going on.
Braver Angeles provides many, many opportunities.

(10,072 posts)Your stereotype of "them" is as accurate as their stereotype of "us." I think we'd better start working to reach across divides if we want to actually make any progress as a country on the things we agree on -- and there is a lot of common ground.
The "Reds" who show up at BraverAngels.org events are choosing to risk talking -- and listening. And if they are willing, I think more of us ought to be willing. It's not all peaches and cream. It's uncomfortable, infuriating, and very, very, difficult at times. But i've come out of every event happy that I attended.
And another thing. I didn't join to "try to understand." I joined because I didn't like what I was becoming. I joined because I felt sick about my own anger and hate. The only thing feeding my hate for "them" did for me was to cut me off from my own humanity. I joined for myself. Not for "them."

That's not stereo typing. Listen to any Republican national politician! They are proudly telling everyone that they stand against human rights for anyone who isn't a white male Christian. They will get no empathy from me as long as they hold that view or vote for any who tries to enact laws that will harm others. There is 0 excuse for that.
pat_k
(10,072 posts)Just sharing the positive experiences I've had at BraverAngels.org events. I was tired of othering "them." I find the events to be very creatively structured in a way that opens moments of shared humanity and empathy across the "divide." It gives me hope. Something I've found in short supply these past years.
There was one woman who stands out in my mind. She was incredibly nervous. As the "Red/Blue Workshop" unfolded, it became clear that she was afraid of the "blues." She believed "blues" would reject and ridicule her for being a Christian. Through some difficult, honest, and respectful exchanges. It became clear to her that the "blues" (at least the ones in the zoom room) not only didn't hate her, some shared her faith. When she started crying, it brought tears to my eyes. I was so sad that she had been so afraid of "people like me."
They also work to find common ground on tough issues. For example, Trustworthy Elections. Read more about the process here:
https://braverangels.org/trustworthy-elections/
The set of proposals that came out of the process provide a "common ground" place -- areas that real progress can be made based on values shared by reds and blues.
They are currently engaging in a similar process on border security and immigration reform.
I think is it worthwhile work worthy of my time. Your mileage may vary.
Are they still going to vote for Trump?
Others are never Trumpers. The "reds" and "blues" who show up are a self-selected group of people who are already willing to take a shot at "engaging" with the other side in way that doesn't feed the flames of anger and hate. The one thing in common is frustration with the vicious cycle of growing polarization and hate. Some have lost friends and family to "the divide" and are hoping to find a way to reconnect on some level.
Although changing minds is not the point of the workshops, one thing I've seen over and over is a softening of position that comes out of someone feeling heard by the "other side."
For anyone interested I would start with a "disagreeing better" workshop. They also have a monthly film and discussion group that is usually interesting. A more intensive workshop is the "red/blue" workshop. That's one I'd like to do again, but I think they prioritize people who haven't taken it before. There are many, many, other types of events. There are "debates" (not structured like a typical debate) on controversial topics. In places with an established chapter, there are in-person events. There are also opportunities to engage in structured 1-to-1 virtual meetings someone from the "other side."
As much as "we" may be disgusted by "their" othering, I see a good bit of "othering" of "them" on our side.
BlueKota
(2,888 posts)As someone who was bullied, however, burying my emotions literally made me ill. All the anger at them that I wasn't expressing I turned on myself.
The few times I stood up to them, I actually felt better. For example these girls in my class who always thought themselves, "very special," wanted to have the rest of us sign an apology to our teacher who had just gotten fired by the principal in front of us. The "teacher," was fired because she had just slammed a boy's head against the black board so hard, he fell unconscious and had to be rushed to the ER in an ambulance. We were 12. He probably said something to her that he shouldn't have but there was no excuse to do that to a kid.
When they asked me to sign it, I said
there was no way I was going to apologize to someone so cruel, we did nothing to apologize for and that she deserved what she got. Do you know what happened?
Some of the boys who were always making fun of me, came up and hugged me and told me it was about time I stopped being a doormat and that they were proud of me and they refused to sign too.
It's one thing if someone else is actually sorry for hurting others, and actually apologizes too, but it's quite another if they go on treating other people badly, or associate with people who do, and expect the rest of us to go along just to get along.
Anyone with any common sense should have the capability to see Trump is a vicious person who wants to have other people physically harmed. That's why I will never tell someone I understand why they are Trump supporter, because I won't lie like Donny does.
Democrats aren't perfect but we aren't the ones saying we are going to put people in concentration camps just because they have a different religion or skin color, or they love someone of the opposite sex. I will never be accepting of anyone who
supports those kind of views.
pat_k
(10,072 posts)Where I have had a different experience relates to "if they go on treating other people badly, or associate with people who do..."

(109 posts)I have. You cannot reason with these people. You can show them actual facts from the source, and they still believe the felon.
I dont hate anyone, but if I ever HAVE to deal with them lately, and their fascist political views come out, I refute them once and only once. If they keep on with their rhetoric, I just give them the old, uh huh, do whatever business I have to do with them and avoid them. There used to be times where I would keep going on how their reasoning is flawed, but not any more. They will not listen. If they are to come around to a sane point of view, they will on their own.
Just saying that I dont hate them, but reasoning with them is futile. Better to let them discover for themselves, than have someone shove it down their throat.

(10,072 posts)... one of the structured BraverAngels.org workshops. They try to promote a different kind of engagement that helps break though the defensive walls.
Because their sponsors are Fox News and The Blaze.
Their President is a right winger, and their biggest donor is promoting speakers like Clarance Thomas and Dubya.
I can never use them as a resource for anything.
You can learn a lot by a five minute search on the top people in the organization and their donors. It is available by reading their 990 tax form, which is available right on their website.
pat_k
(10,072 posts)... a majority of the members and small donors are "blues" as a sign it is all a big liberal conspiracy. I judge by the quality and effect of the workshops and their honest effort to balance every position of leadership between "reds" and "blues." Recruiting reds is the major challenge because liberals are more open to the power of talking than conservatives.

You know what, a lot of this reasoning with the extreme right has led the US to becoming more and more right leaning. I am tired of letting them take things away from us, even if it is a little. Its high time they started giving back all the things that they took, and someone standing firmly for that. Why is it that the left always has to give in a little to the right? Next thing, and we are all out fascist!
I have dealt with some republicans who seem to want to get along, and compromise. They just end up stabbing you in the back. No more of that for me. I am sticking to my convictions. Eventually, you will learn.

I found her absolutely mesmerizing and I remember noticing how she was the only girl in the main cast. I loved her character even more when I learned the back story of her name:
"Uhura" comes from the Swahili word uhuru, meaning "freedom". Nichols states in her 1994 book Beyond Uhura that the name was inspired by Robert Ruark's 1962 book Uhuru, which she had with her on the day she read for the part. When producer Robert Justman explained to Roddenberry what the word uhuru meant, he changed it to Uhura and adopted that as the character's name.

This is the antithesis of MAGA which is backwards looking and isolationist.
2. The Prime Directive - non-interference with the development of alien civilisations and cultures.
The single most important moral principles in the Star Trek universe is to live and let live. This is the antithesis of MAGA trying to control people and stop them from defining their own identities, loving who they want to love, reading what they want to read, speaking how they naturally speak, etc.
If you're only watching Star Trek because you enjoy stuff getting blown up in space, then you've very much missed the point of the series.
And for all the MAGA out there moaning about how the real celebrities are all Democrats, it might be worth reflecting on the role of art and culture in society which is about exploring, acceptance and inclusion. If you can't back any of those things, then you need to get used to all the real artists expressing withering contempt for you. Your ideology threatens their existence.

Was it. I'm guessing they found great meaning in the the sci-fi series Gor. That is if they even bother to read since I don't recall the Gor books being in film

(1,213 posts)Nichelle Nichols was such a close friend of MLK that she complained to him about how she found her role as Uhura so limited and almost demeaning. He encouraged her to stay, because he believed that she was shattering barriers as a black woman with a regular speaking part on a sci-fi TV show in the 60s.
He was right. Her part is small, but it had a huge impact for black actors, especially women.

The fourth film has them unable to get things because they not only had no money, they were surprised at needing it for anything. 'Oh yeah--these people used money--how quaint!' They were then having to panhandle so they could get things they needed.

(3,145 posts)As a WWII aviation history buff, I like going to air shows that showcase refurbished WWI planes. Most of the participants at these ostensibly non-partisan events are right-wingers who openly display pro-Trump and nasty anti-Biden paraphernalia. I keep my mouth shut and never engage them. But they express threatening thoughts and violent rhetoric that makes me very uncomfortable. At times, I don't feel safe.
An acquaintance of mine - who is quite progressive, but also a gun hobbyist - says that gun shows are similarly problematic and are worse than the air shows.
My friend and I have resigned ourselves to the fact that certain of our hobby interests overlap with and fall within interest areas dominated by the conservative mindset. It is what it is, and we can still enjoy these interests with caution.
Conservatives have to understand that SciFi, Star Trek and Star Wars fans, and industries aligned with Hollywood, are going to be dominated by liberals and that - if they, too, are Star Trek fans - they'll just have to grin and bear it just like my friend and I do.

(2,468 posts)I grew tired of inane announcers and bad music drowning out the show. Speakers should be silent when aircraft are over the field. I haven't been to a show since I left Oregon. Went to one gun show. I can mokusatsu Trumpanzees anywhere and often do so.
I still want to go to AirVenture someday.
"displeasure" several years ago to go to a big combination Flea Market/Gun Show/Knife Show because I was helping someone unload his boxes of junk for the flea market. I never in my life saw such an assemblage of kooks. Oh yes and mixed in with the guns and knifes on the tables most of the "proprietors" had literature to hand out that was all about conspiracy theories, anti-Semitism, racism and the need to do home-schooling etc. I saw families that didn't look like they had ever seen a barber, a dentist or a shower marching along with swords and daggers they had just bought and wearing t-shirts expressing their bigotry.
These are some of the folks the pundits tell us we should "reach out to" and "listen to" because they "haven't been heard". Most of us heard their BS long ago and made the wise decision that they shouldn't be listened to.

Im of course making some assumptions here. Such as they are white and at least middle class. A lot people outside of these parameters will never be allowed the luxury of resting from maggot abuse due their appearance. Doesnt matter how they are just how they appear. Personally Id be ok if every maggot had the letter T carved into their forehead similar to the treatment of Nazis in the movie Inglorious Bastards

(2,714 posts)reich-wingers have NEVER understood the messaging behind, not only Star Trek and Star Wars (as if Vader's helmet wasn't a fkng clue), but also in what Lee once dubbed "pop art productions" (yes, I was a reader/collector of them back in the 60's and early '70's - an avid one, to the point of starting to sound like them... 'nuff said').
They didn't get the anti-fascist, good vs. evil messaging in Marvel, nor DC,
and for a long time never had a clue that Homelander (The Boys) was a fkn psychopath.

We really need to focus on actually reaching out with a message of unity, shared values (and there are many), and hope for the future.
This "them" hating on us, and "us" hating on them, is NOT the way out of this.

(30,272 posts)Trump and the MAGA folks represent the opposite of what he believed in and why he created Star Trek. As a Trekkie, in particular of Voyager because Captain Janeway was fierce, I'm glad that Jerry Ryan and Kate Mulgrew spoke up against the fascist attempt to take over this country. This is not a normal election. This is a pivotal election that would change the U.S. as we know it if Trump were to win and most of the proposals of Project 2025 were implemented.
As for these Trump followers, may it be a wake up call to them. The majority of Americans do NOT support the vile man. He, and Republicans, do not represent the will of the majority of Americans. As of 2020, they won the popular vote only once in 32 years (Bush after 9/11).

They endorse those who preach and spread venom, bigotry, and malice,

yet their own little world should remain sacrosanct - untouched and unchanged, and everyone should treat them nicely.

Before you say "well I thought you're the party of tolerance and inclusion" I say this:
"We tolerate your right to exist, but that does not mean we are required to pretend to like and or respect you, and we don't."
"We don't like you and we do not respect you. We do not be civil with you because you are a Nazi."

There is a Next Generation episode (from more than 20 years ago) where everyone on a planet is gender neutral but to express interest in someone who isn't gender neutral is considered wrong and they have to undergo treatment.
