House progressives just withdrew their Ukraine letter:
"The letter was drafted several months ago, but unfortunately was released by staff without vetting...it is a distraction at this time and we withdraw the letter.

Because no matter what color lipstick you put on that pig, that is what the letter called for- buried amongst many pretty words of course. Is it worth Ukraine giving up some territory to have peace in our time?
Warpy
(111,480 posts)and that was that the whole missile crisis was started when the US put nuclear ICBM silos in Turkey. That's why Russia responded by putting them into Cuba. Since neither leader wanted to be leader of an ash heap, they dismantled theirs and we dismantled ours.
Negotiations have to be carried out in good faith. That is impossible right now as Putin is locked into a fantasy world and is driven by zealotry that tells him that being a pathological liar is showing strength. The Russians will have to be completely kicked out of Ukraine before he'll admit he's been licked and will come to the table to stop the strikes that will likely be ongoing on the Russian side of the Russian-Ukrainian border, Ukraine being well within their rights to attack military installations that threaten it. The Russians will likely still be shelling them and launching missiles from their side of the border.
Any negotiations before that point will be futile. As long as Putin has conquered any of their territory, he will sign anything to give Russia some time to regroup, rearm, and restart his stupid war. He will have to be utterly and completely defeated before he or anyone else in that government will start to be reasonable.

(7,290 posts)And I'm an old peacenik who served his time at peace camps and being active in various other ways during the 1980s. Where were you?
What in Putin's conduct makes you imagine for one minute that he interprets capitulation as other than weakness and a green light to push ahead with his deranged agenda even more?
What in his stewardship of the Russian federation and the occupied territories in Ukraine makes you fantasize that surrender to his rule leads to anything but corruption that benefits him and his cronies, widespread torture and genocide?
What makes you think that rewarding his threats of nuclear strikes with concessions will not spur him to threaten even more?
There will be a time for negotiation, and that will be on Ukraine's terms once Putin's troops have been driven out of the occupied territories and we can begin addressing multiple war crimes, reparations and a future role for whatever's left of the Russian Federation that doesn't mean continuing peril for its neighbours and the rest of the world.

(2,957 posts)The Russians are on the run and getting pushed out of their illegally stolen territories. They've committed horrible crimes against the Ukrainians and it's not our call to say that Ukraine should "let Russia win" because Putin has you scared of nukes. Nuclear blackmail can never be allowed to work or the future will be nothing but nuclear blackmail and proliferation which will make nuclear war even more likely.

WASHINGTON, DC - AUGUST 12: Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and fellow members of the House Progressive Caucus hold a news conference ahead of the vote on the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 outside the U.S. Capitol on August 12, 2022 in Washington, DC. Despite not achieving everything the House liberals wanted, the $737 billion act will focus on slowing climate change, lower health care costs, and creating clean energy jobs by enacting a 15% corporate minimum tax, and a 1% fee on stock buybacks, and enhancing IRS enforcement. (6,017 posts)And, McConnell has at times signaled that the GOP wouldn't support sending aid.
So I can see a few times where suggesting the USA throw our weight (such as it is, given that we invaded Iraq not so very long ago) behind negotiations if it looked like Putin was not going to be stopped by the Ukraine army at that moment in time.
Also, assuming their story is true, the letter was prepared but not sent. I'm guessing that happens a lot.

The timing and tenor of this appeasement is as odious today (on the eve on an election) as it was just after Bucha.
Jayapal has much to answer for over this incident and this letter is not sufficient in this Democrat's estimation. Not even close.

(18,942 posts)Also- it's a distraction at this time? So you don't deny the message, only the timing is inconvenient?
Now to be fair, all of the links go to articles in the May-June time frame. However that indicates Russian successes at that time left them considering we should help Ukraine with a negotiated settlement, i.e. surrender.
The drafting of the letter was extremely ill considered and the release/ retraction nothing short of a fiasco.
"Staff" should not be releasing such volatile documents without express approval. It begs the question why was anyone even looking at it, let alone sending it to the White House and press???
Cha

(58,785 posts)This disruption and mistake in judgment (and subsequent failure) are all part of a now-established pattern. As I mentioned elsewhere, with a critically important election almost upon us I'd wondered if she'd once again do something that put her in the spotlight, once again supported by only a minority of the 100-member caucus.
Well, once again there's a spotlight on her -- at what is an especially existential moment for the Democratic Party, and thus the nation.

(54,527 posts)It indicates they are attributing too much star power to themselves, completely forgetting that it was their message that made them into celebrities. Being a celebrity does NOT give you the right to then say stupid things and then expect people to cheer regardless. Have they forgotten so soon who Donald Trump and Herschel Walker are?
Tarheel_Dem
(31,258 posts)toxic for the rest of us. I cringe when I see every utterance from some of these "celebrity" office holders posted here on a regular basis, as if everything they say should etched in stone like the Commandments. I don't idolize these people, and wish many of them would just put their heads down, work their asses off & keep their mouths shut, lest it come back to haunt us all. This is another of those instances, where they just handed the opposition talking points just days before a major election.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)If people only insisted on that as a basic standard to be met, it'd be fine if a legislator also thrilled people by reciting great quotes about democracy while twirling flaming batons. Just not instead.
Tarheel_Dem
(31,258 posts)the job done should be the goal. I don't need to be covered in glory and adoration just for simply "saying stuff", or "smack talking". We've always had those who, in furthereance of their own egotistical brands, never miss an opportunity to mug for the nearest camera. I think that says quite a lot about them, but I won't get into that here. Jayapal should step down, and if she won't, her colleagues should force her out like they do in the UK.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)I realize it may not come naturally; and unlike those to whom it does, you may get no particular pleasure from adulation.
But, consider this: Once you've drawn a following, LW or RW, or both, all you have to do to keep it is to continue criticizing Democrats. Every time you raise your head to toss another little criticism on the fire, the level of admiring mentions and donations will pick up. And whenever you do a really bomb-throwing job of it, even just a particularly obnoxious tweet that takes maybe 20 seconds, donations and cheers from admirers will flood in!
When I think about it, I'm grateful they don't ALL blow off legislating to take up populist demagoguery instead. There're obviously huge markets for it. Just choose a favorite grievance to hit -- class inequality, immigration, #justsayno, Second Amendment rights, whatever -- and see if you're any good at it.
If you are you'll know because from Day 1 new adorers will be calling for you to Run For President...! "President Tarheel Dem!"
