NY-14: Democrat launches primary challenge to Ocasio-Cortez

New York City Council Member Fernando Cabrera (D) has launched a primary bid to unseat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

Cabrera filed last week with the Federal Election Commission to run for the seat in New York's 14th District, which includes parts of the Bronx and Queens.

Cabrera has represented the Bronx in New York's City Council since 2010, his campaign website notes. Politico reported that he officially began his campaign on Thursday.

“Only a Democrat is going to be able to defeat her, and it’s going to be a moderate Democrat,” he told the news outlet. “She’s a no-show in the district. She hasn’t brought about anything except division within the party.”

He added that he objects to Ocasio-Cortez's self-described democratic socialist beliefs, her "Green New Deal" plan and her support for "Medicare for All."

“Socialism doesn’t work. I don’t want it for my children, for my grandchildren,” he told Politico.

He told the newspaper he decided to enter the race after Ocasio-Cortez spoke out against Amazon's plan to open a second headquarters in Queens, which has since been scuttled.

But this guy is using RIGHT WING talking points against her. AOC's voice is vital to this sick, corrupted system and layering on 1000 corporate Democrats won't change it.

If she loses, the corporate oligarchy will rejoice. WAY TO BE A REAL DEM

Fernando Cabrera Draws Fire for Ties to Hate Group

https://observer.com/2014/06/fernando-cabrera-draws-fire-for-ties-to-hate-group/

A Bronx councilman and senate contender has a controversial Family secret.

Councilman Fernando Cabrera, a pastor and socially conservative Democrat, recently appeared on the radio show of the Family Research Council, a right-leaning organization that was labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law center four years ago. Mr. Cabrera also participated in a 2012 FRC event that included Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, leading a top rival to slam him for being out of touch with the heavily Democratic Bronx.

“This just affirms what we’ve known all along—that Fernando Cabrera never really left the Republican Party, and is totally out of step with the values of true Democrats,” Karthik Ganapathy, a spokesman for State Senator Gustavo Rivera, told the Observer. “From rallying against marriage equality to opposing a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions, Mr. Cabrera’s entire record shows he simply does not have the progressive credentials to represent our neighborhoods in Albany.”

Mr. Cabrera is challenging Mr. Rivera for his west Bronx seat. Elected in 2009, Mr. Cabrera is a former Republican who is one of the more conservative members of the overwhelmingly liberal City Council.

Though his not known for making incendiary remarks, Mr. Cabrera is tied to a group that is: the FRC was classified a hate group due to anti-gay speech from its leaders, including a call for gay men and lesbians to be imprisoned. The FRC joined groups like the Ku Klux Klan and the Nation of Islam when it was slapped with the designation by the influential civil rights organization.

On Sunday, September 9, 2012, Family Research Council and American Family Association hosted iPledge Sunday from First Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC, an event streamed to thousands of churches and home groups across the nation encouraging Christians to Pray, Prepare, and Participate in the 2012 election.

Participants included Tony Perkins, Kirk Cameron, Sen. Rick Santorum, Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr., Kristan Hawkins, Franklin Graham, Dr. Mark Harris, NYC Fernando Cabrera, and others.

Pol praises African gov't targeting gays

https://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20140903/BLOGS04/140909970/pol-praises-african-gov-t-targeting-gays

A YouTube video has surfaced showing Bronx Councilman Fernando Cabrera in Uganda praising the leadership of the African country for its socially conservative positions, amid widespread international condemnation for its passing one of the world's most severe anti-gay laws.

The Ugandan law, which was passed last December by its parliament and signed in February, reportedly created lifetime prison sentences for some homosexual acts. (It initially would have imposed the death penalty, but was ultimately amended.) The law made it a crime to "promote" homosexuality, and to rent an apartment to an LGBT person without informing other tenants or the authorities.

Mr. Cabrera is attempting to unseat Bronx state Sen. Gustavo Rivera, and socially conservative positions may well hurt his chances in the Democratic primary. Gay rights activists recently reacted angrily when Harlem Rep. Charles Rangel endorsed Mr. Cabrera.

In a video shot during a visit to the African country in January, Mr. Cabrera, a socially conservative pastor in the Bronx, appeared to praise the country’s leaders for standing up to President Barack Obama and others who had condemned the Ugandan government's actions.

"Godly people are in government," Mr. Cabrera said, referring to Uganda's leadership. "Gay marriage is not accepted in this country. Even when the United States of America has put pressure and has told Uganda, 'We’re not going to fund you anymore unless you allow gay marriage.' And they have stood in their place. Why? Because the Christians have assumed the place of decision-making for the nation."

I have no problem at all with people trying to primary House members in safe blue seats, btw. If anyone wants to take a whack at AOC, well go for it. I do not think they will have much luck.

I have two (the only 2 I am really interested in because they are so anti-democratic platform, anti-LGBTQ, ant-choice, anti-immigrant, etc., plus have overall terrible voting records on so many issues and used horrific RW-backed smear campaigns (Lipinski v Marie Newman) or supported and fundraised for Rethugs against Democratic candidates (Cuellar with climate change denier ultra RW John Carter v MJ Hegar) I really want to see go down, Dan Lipinski in IL-3 and the even worse Henry Cuellar in TX-28.

I have no other races I care about in terms of primaries of incumbents in safe Blue House seats. I never advocate primarying Dem incumbents in shaky pink, purple or red seats. I think that is asking for trouble.

I also recently have given up on Tulsi Gabbard, and now support her challenger, Kai Kahele in HI-2. She has worn out her welcome finally for me, after this latest stunt/attack on the DNC over the debates. She is more trouble than she is worth IMHO, and Kahele is a far superior candidate to Gabbard's last 2 challengers, whom she crushed.

It used to be ,"You must vote for dems in the general. If you want the party to go in a different direction, that's what primaries are for."

Now it has progressed to "you shouldn't use the primaries to move the party in a different direction".

I'm guessing the next step is that you should never support anyone even in open seat primaries unless the party bosses say its ok.

I wonder if the draconian blacklist of consultants who dare work on the campaign of a primary challenger will apply to this guy and his team or if there is an exception for running against people on the left.

This will be fun. As he's not the only one...

“A Democratic activist from Queens has announced she’ll challenge Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a primary for her congressional seat.

Badrun Khan, who officially filed her candidacy in July, announced her campaign on Wednesday, according to The Hill.

When asked about the new challenger, Ocasio-Cortez told the site, “I just focus on delivering for my district and doing the best job. I try not to focus too much on other folks in the field.”
Khan, who is from New York, was raised by Bengali-born parents and is “heavily involved in her Bengali Community throughout the city,” according to her campaign site.”

She won a primary with a very low total vote...and of course she won the general as it is a very Democratic district..so it should be interesting. Also, these are Democratic party folks...attacks on other Democrats are not appreciated in this district. Truly, we will keep the seat no matter who runs...but I do think it is a waste of time and money that could be spent getting rid of Republicans.

AOC polls as well as Pelosi or Schumer in her district and she will have all the resources she needs. Her celebrity is an asset there:

Most people in this country either don’t like her or just don’t know enough about her, but Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez remains popular among her home constituency in New York’s 14th District.

Fifty-two percent of the freshman congresswoman’s registered constituents in The Bronx and the north-central portion of Queens view her favorably, compared to 33 percent who view her unfavorably, according to a new poll from the Sienna College Research Institute released Wednesday.

Ocasio-Cortez’ popularity ratings mirrored the results for both Democratic congressional leaders, Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer of New York, among those surveyed in her district.

“Fifty-nine percent of voters [in the Sienna poll] say that they are proud to have Ocasio-Cortez representing the district, and 61 percent agree that while many of her ideas on the economy, climate or healthcare may not become law soon, they think she is moving us towards a more fair and just society,” Don Levy, the poll’s director, said in a statement.

Levy cited widespread popularity for Ocasio-Cortez’s policy positions — free tuition at public colleges across the country, a ban on assault weapons, a federal guarantee of a job that pays a living wage and “Medicare for all” — as a factor that could be boosting the freshman firebrand.

Pollsters from Sienna College conducted the survey by telephone in both English and Spanish between March 31 and April 4, reaching 607 registered voters. The poll has an overall margin of error of +/- 4.3 percentage points, including the design effects resulting from weighting.
