Fortville officer shot: Suspect to be identified this afternoon; officer's condition upgraded

A missing taillight started a chain of events that ended in a shootout between police and a suspect in Lawrence. A Fortville officer was wounded and the alleged assailant was later shot to death in a confrontation with police.
Fortville Officer Matt Fox pulled over the suspect for not having a taillight around 11:30 p.m. Friday at 800 North and 700 West in Hancock County, police said. The suspect then fled, leading Fox on a chase toward High View Drive and Clearview Lane, where the suspect shot Fox. Ind. cop shot in ambush released from hospital

INDIANAPOLIS A police officer who was struck by gunfire in the head and the wrist during an ambush attack was released from the hospital Thursday, just under one week since the assault.
Officer Matt Fox, of the Fortville (Ind.) Police Department, was attempting to effect a traffic stop on James Lockhart for a missing taillight last Friday night.
