A) have the power to do ill
B) have the willingness to do ill
Having a firearm you are competent to operate available for your protection will, in certain circumstances, negate or, at minimum, equalize A) in a way no other method can. And without A), B) often goes away, at least long enough to resolve the immediate situation.
