Germanys leading opinion pollster has said it is far from certain that this general election year will end with Angela Merkel as chancellor.
Dr Renate Köcher of the prestigious Allensbach Institute has dismissed the widespread view in Berlin that Dr Merkel is a shoo-in for a third term leading a second grand coalition with the opposition Social Democrats (SPD).
Im amazed how many people today seem to assume well have another grand coalition after the next election, said Dr Köcher yesterday. Thats a possible scenario but another is an SPD-Green coalition . . . they only need two to three points to win a majority, so in that sense the race is open.
With nine months to polling day, Dr Köcher said the least likely election result was a return of the current coalition of Dr Merkels Christian Democrats (CDU) with the liberal Free Democrats (FDP).
