(13,877 posts)is going to drive his pickup truck or van 30-40 miles to chance to burglarize a rural home...unless s/he knows no one is home or has some indication that there are moveable, pawnable or quickly saleable items that will make it worth the heist...at which point an owner's gun does no good. And those that do happen are often "inside jobs". That's what home security systems are for. Leaving aside the emotional subject of guns or weapons, especially if a home is not known to house said weapons, not likely to happen.
It's kind of like trick-or-treating...excuse the reference...but best to go where the pickings are good. Usually, in urban/suburban areas, someone has left open a car door or a back door. Twice I had burglaries...once was when my car was inadvertently left unlocked...thief got a couple of bucks from change in the ash tray...and the other time my son's school pack was left in his truck, in sight, and a shoddy lock got easily busted or more likely, he left it unlocked. There wasn't a true break-in in the suburban neighborhood for years...unless something was left unlocked.
Second the "industrial revolution" reference...for ill or for good...comes with the demographics.
