13. For what it's worth...

...I understand that after brand-new (Democratic) Senator Heidi Heitkamp expressed opposition to new gun measures, basically said they wouldn't pass, her opposition was the subject of an advertising campaign, and she evidently tempered her remarks.

I haven't much faith that will work with McCain, especially given the ferocity of the GOP's digging-in approach following their failure to win either the White House or the Senate, but still, a few losses in the court of public opinion might make some difference.

What I hate most is people announcing in advance how the vote will go, especially after the scores of occasions the GOP misused the threat of filibuster.
