They were way too busy jetting around the world, getting laid, having a great time blowing shit up while serving Uncle Sam. Charlie was a nationalist and a party animal.
As for the Taliban, they're not nationalists, exactly - they were an Army of G-d, tribal people who survived since the dawn of time by killing outsiders led by fundamentalist Wahabi fundamentalists hell-bent upon annihilating all vestiges of secular western influence and socialism inside Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Arab countries, and the rest of the world. G-d help the women in Kabul who used cosmetics. If you owned a beauty parlor, you were dead. What an irony - Charlie was so much a part of the culture the Taliban saw as an "abomination against G-d."
Great movie, even better book. Lots of good stuff in there, also, about Agency culture. You should pick it up.
