Every now and then, one of these white supremacists suddenly does a rapid-fire volley of their racist cant at me, with that odd facial expression like they are happy to be so angry. It always takes me by surprise, just when I am enjoying the sight of some sweet children or cute teens or a happy young family. I feel my jaw drop open, and usually they make a disgusted grunt and turn and stride away angrily. Then I stew over the incident endlessly, wondering why I can't seem to think fast enough to shoot a coherent rapid-fire volley back. In a small town where your family is known to be successful and cohesive and effective in countering their delusion, maybe they have given up bothering you about it.

And yes, it is true, sometimes we non-vicious whites do get a little overeager to praise Black people, but it's not because WE believe those filthy lies of the white supremacists! We are just constantly stewing over one or another of these verbal racist volleys, feeling sad and defeated about what happened. When we see a Black person who personifies a great refutation, then we sort of try to memorize a snappy retort we can use the next time it happens. And we talk to ourselves, saying, there, you see, there is somebody right now who proves that isn't true, and couldn't I maybe work up the gumption to speak up on their behalf, and if I work out the words ahead of time maybe I can do it fast enough for it to count.

These vicious white supremacists seem to have an uncanny instinct for finding the other person's weakest moment to unload their propaganda. They especially love the exact moment when you have food in your mouth and are about to swallow, so that you wind up choking on it. Once my husband took a job at a factory with a lot of whites and one tall strong smart genial Black guy. My husband really liked that Black guy, and also he was overjoyed that the other white workers didn't say one racist thing the first few days. Then that one great Black guy quit, and overnight the entire atmosphere changed to verbal poison. Lunchtime became very uncomfortable for him after that. And of course they are very aggressive against anybody who dares to correct them, unless you have a strong set of cohorts around you. Some whites have been beaten up, or had their pets killed, or even been shot for being "race traitors." As you might imagine, white "race traitors" don't tend to be among the most aggressive white people, anyway.
