(32,886 posts)The larger Mobile metropolitan area (60 mile radius) has 1.2 million people. If someone is really so exciting to you, you will drive 60 miles to get there, and folks in the south have cars that's how they get places.
35K of 1.2 million means only 2.9% of the greater metro area turned out. That's just not an impressive number. Even with the abysmal turnout we get for Presidential elections in the US, 58% turned out for election 2012. Assuming you need an average of 29.1% of the population throughout the country voting for you to win the election, 2.9% is 10% of that.
And this is a Conservative area where the GOP nominee should win a higher percentage than that.
Now I know some of you are going to say, Steve, the turnout at a rally isnt the same thing as an election where much larger amounts of people vote, etc. Yeah, that's true. But these kinds of rallies by folks who would likely vote for the nominee of their party anyway just doesn't mean much.
If you get 14-15% of an area's population wanting to come see someone, let me know. That kind of number is where you are starting to get interesting.
