(135,425 posts)If he were speaking in reasonable proximity to me (like say, a ten minute drive with plenty of parking) I'd go and bring many cameras and record the hot mess for posterity. Does this mean I would ever think about voting for the loon? Hell no--but who doesn't like an occasional foray into absurdity. Sure, it's bad theater, but it's also free.
He's the Pet Rock, the Beanie Baby, the Garbage Pail Kid of the silly season--everyone wants to see what he will do or say next. Eventually, even a massive gasbag will run out of air, though~!

(39,343 posts)Apparently paying those first few actors when he announced has worked out well for him.
I'm just mad I'm not making money off the rubes that support him. I should be selling something like Gluten free bottled water to those idiots.

(1,252 posts)He is drawing a line in the sand. His stance against human beings and human rights is bringing hate mainstream. People like Jan Mickelson are echoing his sentiments and making it mainstream to want to abolish birthright citizenship. If you don't have your papers you could become property of the state and sold off as slave labor.
Trump is dangerous.

(32,886 posts)The larger Mobile metropolitan area (60 mile radius) has 1.2 million people. If someone is really so exciting to you, you will drive 60 miles to get there, and folks in the south have cars that's how they get places.
35K of 1.2 million means only 2.9% of the greater metro area turned out. That's just not an impressive number. Even with the abysmal turnout we get for Presidential elections in the US, 58% turned out for election 2012. Assuming you need an average of 29.1% of the population throughout the country voting for you to win the election, 2.9% is 10% of that.
And this is a Conservative area where the GOP nominee should win a higher percentage than that.
Now I know some of you are going to say, Steve, the turnout at a rally isnt the same thing as an election where much larger amounts of people vote, etc. Yeah, that's true. But these kinds of rallies by folks who would likely vote for the nominee of their party anyway just doesn't mean much.
If you get 14-15% of an area's population wanting to come see someone, let me know. That kind of number is where you are starting to get interesting.

(32,284 posts)So by your standard a Democrat does not have much going for them unless they draw 3 million at a rally.
stevenleser
(32,886 posts)Doesn't prove it one way or the other.
Ron Paul got rallies the size of Bernies and Trumps. He had a small cadre of fanatical supporters and they showed up to see him wherever he went. But he didn't get close to even the nomination let alone winning a general election.
If you want crowds that show something is going on, something dramatic, it's got to be a lot larger than this percentage wise of the local population.
former9thward
(32,284 posts)Almost no metro center has venues which would hold 15% of their population. In fact I know of none. Clinton and Bush would love to have crowds as big as Sanders and Trump.

(900 posts)the Democratic nominee in 08 ?
hey like HRC supporters love to say:" she still the front runner with the household name and polls suggest she's "inevitable" nominee for the party "
We shall see if the Ghost of 08' wont revisit her
its can be Sanders,O'malley, VP Biden that can end up being the nominee

Fresh eyes bring new realities to light! And in such a linguistically creative manner!
How innovative!
