stood up to the gunman and died protecting their students (many of whom were saved and will hopefully have full lives because of them), while the politicians who love to bash, trash and demonize them and their profession, and who've been gleefully stripping away their rights and what little salaries and benefits they had, cower and grovel before the NRA. I believe a sign at the anti-NRA rally at their D.C. headquarters on Monday said it best: "Teachers stand up to gunmen. Congress can't stand up to the gun lobby."

I grew up with teacher parents and was surrounded by educators, and I know that these angels were not an aberration, that it is what the vast majority of teachers would do for their students. I know my own parents would have. My mom taught at a juvenile reformatory for boys, where these kinds of situations were always possible, not to mention other less deadly but still dangerous situations and, during the times when she had a boy try to cause shit in class, didn't hesitate to protect the other students.
