Why they have crippled the desktop ui in win8 is a mystery of overpriced strategy consultancy. On the other hand there are already third party apps that retore the damn start button and make win8 usable on the desktop and laptop. Once you do that win8 is actually pretty damn good. Lots of new features including incredibly fast boot times and usb3 support, cloud integration, a new storage filesystem and data archiving system, plus if you do run it on a tablet or phone (or soon on a tv) the metro ui is fine.

Again memory is dirt cheap and the animations use so little of it as to be practically unnoticeable.

Unless you're using a 64 bit OS & 64 bit programs, anything over 2GB is wasted hardware.
