Hanford Dumped Billions of Gallons of Radioactive Waste in the 50s & 60s on the ground
Special Thank you to http://tinyurl.com/3ywthf5 for the beginning of the video!
The Hanford Site is a mostly decommissioned nuclear production complex on the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Washington, operated by the United States federal government. The site has been known by many names, including Hanford Project, Hanford Works, Hanford Engineer Works or HEW and Hanford Nuclear Reservation or HNR. Established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project in the town of Hanford in south-central Washington, the site was home to the B Reactor, the first full-scale plutonium production reactor in the world Plutonium manufactured at the site was used in the first nuclear bomb, tested at the Trinity site, and in Fat Man, the bomb detonated over Nagasaki, Japan.
Sunday Spin: Helping to understand Hanford
http://www.spokesman.com/blogs/spincontrol/2013/mar/02/sunday-spin-helping-understand-hanford/ for full article and 58 minute video. [... Hanford's] tanks are big. The largest are the size of a basketball court with a 75-foot wall around it. Inside the tanks are a "stew of different materials" that form a radioactive sludge, from which the liquid was supposed to have been pumped out years ago. [...]
67 tanks are 'suspected leakers' at U.S. nuclear site "The stuff inside melts the instruments... eats rubber and plastic" (VIDEO)
http://enenews.com/67-suspected-leakers-nuclear-site-stuff-inside-melts-instruments-eats-rubber-plastic-video
Of the 177 tanks, 149 only have a single wall, or shell, and 67 of those were "suspected leakers", but the rest were thought to be secure. Thought to be is a relative term, because in a container that big, a drop of even a fraction of an inch can represent many gallons of waste. You can't just drop a giant dipstick into the tank. As [Jane Hedges of Washington's Department of Ecology] explained, there's no easy way to get an extremely accurate measurement because lowering cameras or instruments into the tanks isn't practical. The stuff inside melts the instruments, and eats rubber and plastic. [...]
Getting the liquid out of the tanks is a problem. First, there's no good place to put it right now, because the more secure double-shelled tanks are also pretty full. Second, there's the danger of triggering evaporation of the liquid, which would cause a tank to heat up and create a deflagration. (AKA an EXPLOSION)

Iran battles plague of 'genetically mutated' giant rats

Tehran, the capital of Iran, is battling an invasion of "genetically mutated" giant rats. Iran has sent in sniper teams to clear Tehran's streets from the massive rodents weighting up to five kilos plaguing 26 district of the Iranian capital, the city's environmental agency said.
"They seem to have had a genetic mutation, probably as a result of radiations and the chemical used on them," Ismail Kahram, Teheran city council environment adviser and university professor Ismail Kahram told Qudsonline.ir.
"They are now bigger and look different. These are changes that normally take millions of years of evolution. They have jumped from 60 grams to five kilos, and cats are now smaller than them."
The "mutated rats" have been running rampant in the capital, as cats are scared off by their giant size and traditional poison appear to have no effect on them. To stop them storming of restaurants' backyards and scavenging public waste containers, the council has deployed ten snipers teams armed with infra-red sighted rifles.

Everyday chemicals linked to diseases, warns World Health Organisation
Source: The Telegraph
By Andrew Hough
11:45PM GMT 19 Feb 2013
In a landmark report, the WHO warned synthetic chemicals had serious implications for human health. The global health watchdog suggested so-called gender-bending compounds found in toys, PVC flooring and even credit cards should be banned in order to protect future generations.
The study said that more research was needed to fully understand the links between endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) found in many household and industrial products and specific diseases and disorders.
It found links between exposure to EDCs and health issues such as testicular problems, breast, prostate and thyroid cancer, developmental effects on the nervous system in children and attention deficit hyperactivity in children.
The UN agency said the study, titled State of the Science of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, was the most comprehensive report on EDCs to date because it has evaluated several chemicals and related evidence rather than focusing on just one.

Social activist Stephane Hessel dies at 95
AlJazeeraEnglish · Published on Feb 27, 2013
French resistance hero and Holocaust survivor Stephane Hessel, whose 2010 manifesto Time for Outrage sold millions of copies and inspired protest movements worldwide, has died at the age of 95.
Hessel joined Charles de Gaulle in exile during World War II, was waterboarded by the Nazis, escaped hanging in concentration camps and took part in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
The career diplomat was already celebrated as one of the last living heroes of the 20th century when, as a nonagenarian, he became the unlikely godfather of youth protest movements such as "Occupy " and Spain's "Indignados".

UK Activists Look To Use Wasted Food

Supermarkets around the world insist on having the very best products on their shelves. So much so that they're willing to throw away perfectly edible food, because it doesn't fit their size and cosmetic standards.
Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from Kent in the UK on how campaigners are trying to save that waste.

Denver Police Officers Won't Be Charged In The 2009 Landau Beating Case
By Sadie Gurman | The Denver Post | Updated: 02/09/2013 02:15:52 PM MSTThe Justice Department on Friday informed a man who was beaten by three Denver police officers in 2009 that it will not charge any of them with civil-rights violations stemming from the case.
Alexander Landau, 23, said representatives from the department and the FBI called him at about 6:30 p.m. to inform him of the decision.
"They said they didn't feel like they had enough evidence to bring federal charges against any of the officers who were initially involved," Landau said.
The agents did not expound on the decision, he said.
