Good advice regarding the societal troubles of guns, republicans, etc.

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
― Richard Buckminster Fuller

Mutual aid is a good start. Unity, compassion, inclusion, support, education, understanding, togetherness. Start making them happen and the opposite becomes forced out!

U.S. Shooting Deaths Since Sandy Hook Top 100

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/21/us-shooting-deaths-sandy-hook_n_2348466.html

This week, as mourners gathered in Newtown, Conn., to bury Sandy Hook Elementary's dead, and a nation renewed its debate over guns, the shootings did not stop. The Huffington Post spent the week tracking gun-related homicides and accidents throughout the U.S., logging more than 100 from Google and Nexis searches. This is by no means a definitive tally. In 2010, there were more than twice that many homicides alone in an average week.

There were murder-suicides. One was shot in the face while sleeping, a baby sound asleep in a crib nearby. One was a grandmother on her way home from a store.

On Saturday afternoon, a 3-year-old in Guthrie, Okla., died after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a gun he found inside his aunt and uncle's house. His uncle is an Oklahoma state trooper.

"Nobody should have to go through something like that," a resident said during a candlelight vigil for the boy. An aunt at the vigil said, "We are all so close to him. My brother here visited him three times a week and my mom babysat him twice a week."

(APN) ATLANTA -- At a press conference at City Hall today, Friday, December 21, 2012, activists with Occupy Atlanta alleged that the City of Atlanta deceived them and the Atlanta Municipal Court with respect to eight hundred pages of documents that the activists say they subpoenaed months ago.

In addition, recent court proceedings have revealed a significant spying operation by the City of Atlanta in connection with other agencies including the federal Department of Homeland Security, on Occupy Atlanta.

All week long, over eighty Occupy Atlanta activists have been on trial, including 53 who were arrested during a massive arrest at Woodruff Park that occurred October 25 and 26, 2011. Most of those were charged with being in the park between 11pm and 6am, a petty misdemeanor.

Other activists faced charges stemming from additional arrests that occurred on November 01, 2011, involving a protest that spilled out into the street; and from a later protest at a Chase Bank branch. The latter arrestees are known as the Chase 8.

Matthew Varnham: 'Occupy is still very much alive'

Occupy still very much alive http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/dec/20/matthew-varnham-occupy-still-alive … @OWS @OccuRecords @OccupyExeter @OccupyTogether @OccupiedTimes @OccupyDublin

When Matthew Varnham travelled from his family home in Leicester to London in October last year, he had no idea what to expect. The 23-year-old law graduate had seen the sea of tents outside St Paul's Cathedral on television and although he did not know anyone there he was sure he wanted to be part of whatever it was that was happening.

"It was funny, but it felt like I had been waiting for something like this," Varnham says 12 months later. "I had wanted to get involved in a social justice movement and then this started and I felt I had to go."

Nowadays, Varnham is looking for work and researching a book, The Practical Guide to Protest. He says that although the tents and banners have gone, the Occupy movement that began in the UK outside St Paul's still takes up most of his time – and is still gathering momentum away from the media attention.

"Looking back and trying to evaluate what happened, I think it is important to recognise the scale of the task we took on – it was quite daunting. It isn't something that was going to be achieved overnight or in a couple of months, it has to be seen as a long-term thing."

US Lost More Troops to Suicide Than Combat in 2012

http://news.antiwar.com/2012/12/20/us-lost-more-troops-to-suicide-than-combat-in-2012/

by Jason Ditz, December 20, 2012

In 2011 the US military lost 165 soldiers to suicide, a record that narrowly beat the 2009 level of 160. This year things have gotten much, much worse, and up to the end of November the suicide deaths are up to 303.

Putting this in perspective, that’s actually quite a bit more than the number of US troops slain in combat so far in 2012. That figure is 212, though the overall US death toll in Afghanistan is 307, including non-combat deaths.

The military has been desperate to get a handle on the rising suicide rate, making several very public efforts, none of which seems to have accomplished much of anything.

The latest on that is a number of Congressmen pushing for a new law allowing the military to ask “unstable” troops whether they own any personal guns, though as with most of the legislative “solutions” to this problem it seems focused more on adding to the stigma of being considered “at risk” than actually encouraging people to seek help.

(Aside from a picture, that is the entire article at the link.)

Occupy Denver stands in solidarity with The Tar Sands Blockade, and is calling for national and international mobilization and solidarity actions against the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Tar sands giant TransCanada has begun construction on the southern leg of the Keystone XL. Leading NASA Climate Scientist James Hansen has called the Keystone XL “game over” for the climate, and Americans are already feeling the heat. The pipeline will make TransCanada rich while encroaching on ranch lands, poisoning Texas’ working class communities, and destroying the environment that makes the lone star state so beautiful.

Kick off the new year by demonstrating your resistance to Keystone XL!

Join us for another mass action in Southeast Texas on Monday, January 7th, including a 3 day training camp leading up to the big event. Our trainings and events are open and include roles for everyone ready to defend our homes from toxic tar sands.

RSVP right now so we can know how many people to expect.

Can't believe I really had to write a blogpost entitled "Let’s Not Militarize Elementary Schools"

"In the aftermath of the Newtown massacre, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has a proposal: 'National Guard troops could be used to support local law enforcement agencies in protecting our children at schools.'

The senator announced yesterday that she’d be introducing two bills aimed at 'protecting children.' The 'Save Our Children' act, Boxer explained, 'would expand a successful National Guard program in place since 1989 that allows governors to use the guard to assist with law enforcement efforts related to drug interdiction and counter-drug activities. So we take a successful program, and we say we’re gonna add a new purpose, and that’s what we do in our legislation.'

This seems like an awful idea, but let’s assume it’s sound policy and was on the books last Friday. Would Adam Lanza have been any less able to carry out the shooting? The answer is almost certainly 'no.' There would have been no good reason for the Connecticut governor to deploy National Guard troops to Sandy Hook Elementary School that morning. The merits and demerits of Boxer’s proposal might be worth deliberating, but these deliberations would bear no meaningful relation to the Newtown massacre. Therefore, now is probably the worst time to debate the new policy, because current discourse related to school violence is so driven by the aftereffects of Newtown. Any debate held now will inevitably be informed more by emotions and hysterics than statistics and reasoning."
