One year ago, the American Medical Association "considered, debated, and then decided to pass when asked to join 36 other medical groups in an initiative intended to curb firearm-related injuries." They decided at their annual meeting not to endorse a call for universal background checks for all gun purchases last year. This year, at their annual meeting, they decided to take a stand:

In a dramatic show of new-found solidarity, the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates today in Chicago, IL approved a resolution to take a stand against gun violence and to lobby Congress to repeal a ban on funding research into its causes. The resolution calls gun violence a public health problem.
The near-unanimous vote (Photo above) came as 55 co-sponsors signed on to the resolution last night as supporters of the measure. It originated with the AMA House of Delegates LGBT advisory committee.
Leading up to the vote this morning, many delegates offered impassioned pleas asking colleagues to endorse the measure.
Sponsor Josh Cohen, MD, of New York City, one of the original sponsors noted that “Gun violence numbers continue to increase. .. America is looking to its physicians for their voice and leadership.”

It’s An Honor To Continue Being Valued Over Countless Human Lives
Truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
You see, I’m just a humble lightweight, magazine-fed semi-automatic rifle; I never expected this kind of outpouring of affection. But time and time again, you’ve shown me how much I matter to you. To see so many people—people who could be working to protect and care for human lives—actively devoting their time and energy to making sure I’m the one who’s protected and cared for instead—it’s beyond touching.
And here’s the thing: It’s not just one life that I’m considered more valuable than. And it’s not 10 lives, either. It’s not even 49 lives. It’s many, many hundreds of lives! Including children’s! Each day that I’m here and they’re not is another affirmation that you consider me more valuable, more sacred, more inviolable than all of them. Frankly, I’m not even sure what I’ve done to deserve such incredible treatment.
Now, I don’t want to jinx anything, but considering how consistently you’ve favored me over the lives of your fellow Americans—for example, in July 2012, in December 2012, in December 2015, and on and on—I can’t imagine you’ll be altering your priorities anytime soon. So I just want to reiterate how truly grateful I am to the millions of you out there who regularly jump into action at the merest suggestion that any human life might be more valuable than I am, and who stand up proudly and say, “No, this particular device is far, far more important than someone’s child, than someone’s spouse, than someone’s parent.”
And after last weekend, I know I can count on you to do the same again.

The Shady History Of The Private Security Firm Omar Mateen Worked For

Omar Mateen’s employer, private security behemoth G4S, is taking a nosedive in the stock market after the 29-year-old suspect went on the deadliest shooting rampage in recent history, killing at least 49 and injuring 53 others in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
G4S is currently being thrust into the spotlight because it employed Mateen, but the firm’s murky reputation precedes it. Staffers have been caught beating and abusing detained immigrants, keeping children in solitary confinement, and torturing inmates all over the world.
But one particularly dark stain on the company’s record is its brief dalliance with the U.S. prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, known for its use of torture and suspension of due process. And the horror stories out of Guantánamo have provided ideal fodder for the type of jihadist media and propaganda that may have spurred Mateen to open fire in the Orlando club.

Pres. Obama: "There's no magic to the phrase 'radical Islam.' It's a political talking point."
In forceful comments Tuesday that repudiated calls to use the term "radical Islam" while underscoring his administration's efforts to defeat terrorism, President Barack Obama blasted such language as dangerous and reactionary and slammed Donald Trump's proposed ban on Muslims.
"There's no magic to the phrase radical Islam. It's a political talking point," Obama said. "The reason I am careful has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with defeating extremism."
Obama's remarks came after a previously scheduled meeting with his National Security Council to discuss the efforts to defeat ISIS. The briefing included an update on the deadly Orlando shooting at a gay nightclub over the weekend that left 49 dead and 53 injured.
The president will travel to Orlando on Thursday to pay respects to the victims of the rampage. The shooter swore allegiance to ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a 911 call placed just before he opened fire in the nightclub.

Let’s call out Trump for what he is. He’s the flipside of Omar Mateen — a man driven by hate, a man who would call America to define itself by its hates.
Tragically, the Trumps of the world and the Matteens of the world feed on each other. They need each other. They stoke each other.

So we need a mass movement against hate. We need leaders of both parties — that includes you, cowering Republicans — to speak out in the spirit of Pastor Niemoller, and stand up against hate before it’s too late. We need the mass media to stop using weasel words and to define Trump for what he is. We need every decent American stand up, before they come for us.
There will be a lot more of this — more loners, more haters, maybe even some real terrorists — between now and November 2016. Then we will find out what sort of people we are.

In response, Post editor Marty Baron, who once was sagacious enough to hire me, said,
"Donald Trump's decision to revoke The Washington Post's press credentials is nothing less than a repudiation of the role of a free and independent press," Baron wrote in a statement. "When coverage doesn't correspond to what the candidate wants it to be, then a news organization is banished. The Post will continue to cover Donald Trump as it has all along – honorably, honestly, accurately, energetically, and unflinchingly. We're proud of our coverage, and we're going to keep at it."

4. Salafi Jihadis don’t text potential hook-ups using a gay dating app.
5. Salafi Jihadis aren’t usually clean shaven.
6. Salafi Jihadis belong to a fringe interpretation of Sunni Islam and despise Shiites; they don’t typically claim to have an affiliation with a Shiite group such as Hizbullah, which is fighting ISIL in Syria. (Here “typically” means, like, “ever.”)
7. Salafi Jihadis don’t express a hope that non-Muslim police will assault their wives. In fact, they wouldn’t want men other than close relatives to so much as see their wives unveiled.
