I am Seriously Amazed.....and so I need a question answered......

I'm amazed because it feels like we are fighting a la Democratic Primaries, here at DU......
30 days ahead of the general election!

Most of us who follow politics and are quite informed on polling UNDERSTAND that there is mixed polling coming out there based on two distinct news events that occurred very close to each other.....

On Wednesday, we had a Presidential Debate in where the media and others called Romney the winner over and over again....nothwistanding Romney's repeated lies in the debate....Good news for Romney!

Then on Friday (two days later), a Job reports came out which brought unemployment down to 7.8%....nothwistanding Republican minions attempting to talk that job report down....Good news for Obama!

SO although 1(good Romney News)+1(good Obama News 2 days later) = 2 (mix bag of polls for at least 7 days)

We appear to have some faithfuls-willing-to-help-at-any-cost citing polls which are technically measuring 1+0=1 and 1+.5=1.5 (at best)...

but none have polls with 1+1=2 ...cause it's still too early, and we need a couple of more days.

My question is, since most of us UNDERSTAND the time lag in terms of truly measuring current public opinion
depending on when said polls were taken, WHY ARE SOME ON THIS SITE ACTING like they have no clue that these polls are very volatile, and in themselves don't really add up to what happened all of last week, but only some of last week?

Tracking polls too closely affects Voter Enthusiasm which in turn affect Election Results

See, I personally believe that posting poll after poll after poll, every hour one comes out, ends up doing a disservice to our chances in winning this election. Know that I'm saying this regardless of whether those polls are going up,up, up, or are coming down, down, down.

I believe that there is a direct correlation between polling direction and voters enthusiasm and election results and that this small circular situation feeds upon itself. Polls results creates a particular environment for voter enthusiasm, which in itself can help make the actual results of an election a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I have read many times at this site that consistent great upward bound poll numbers can lull activists and voters into a false sense of complacency. Although Voter enthusiasm certainly can grow due to positive upward polling, there is also a danger that some voters may simply figure that even if they decide not to bother and vote, their candidate still "has this"....and that could affect our election results if not enough folks show up for the ultimate poll.

Well, as polls lower, a similar result can occur, as the trajectory of polls can also affects voters' enthusiasm to go and vote. Sure, while some folks might end up working extra hard to try and reverse the trend of those polls, there is that thin line, were many others become dispirited and lose some of the drive they need to get out there and make a difference.

Currently, we are in the middle of early voting in many states, and the drive to cast an early ballot can be dimmed as folks start seeing a trend that doesn't favor their candidate. Some may decide to wait and see what happens before casting their votes; especially those who are soft supporters. the media knows this well, and so should we.

It is true that some will dismiss this OP and just believe that posting polls at some political forum has no effect in the real world. In fact, many of the same folks also believe that posting on a political internet site has no bearing on any of our politics at all. Well, I have and always will disagree with that notion that we make no difference, because I believe that we make quite a bit of a difference.

There is a reason that Big Bird as an issue is growing, and that stories of Romney's alleged cheating at the debates is getting some traction with some new sites. There is a reason that media talking heads emphasize on their shows that Obama supporters were deeply disappointed by Pres. Obama's debate performance. How do these talking heads know this? Because they have read it in the Tweets, the blogs and the FB. Don't think that the level of activists' enthusiasm is not measured by the media and the opposition trolling Internet sites such as DU and KOS, because that is exactly where they get quite a bit of their information. It isn't an accident that Republicans constantly talk about disappointed Obama voters. That word "disappointed" was overly used throughout Obama's nearly 4 years in office for just about everything that he did or said or didn't do or neglected to say.

Our media and those who work to influence our elections are quite aware that if active Internet partisans are becoming even a bit discouraged, that there is a very good chance of a resulting ripple effect that eventually will get to the general voters who aren't quite as vested.

In a way, the Republicans had the right idea in terms of telling their folks not to believe all of the polls. Not so much because all of the polls with bad news must be skewed or biased, but because bad polling can dampen enthusiasm, and the level of enthusiasm is crucial to a candidate's ground game and winning election. It appears that Republicans understand this, and we would be wise to understand the same.

SO yes, it is entirely possible that living by poll numbers which are inching downward can have a positive stimulating effect that combats over-confidence....but at some point, that downward effect can become a self fulfilling prophecy, which psychologically make it harder for activists to want to get out there and make a difference, as their job becomes that much harder in terms of the level energy they will have to muster when working in a campaign.

So, I for one, will not be reading certain threads here at DU that are posting polls for the next several days, and if I start seeing too many poll result headlines, I may have to excuse myself from this site altogether for a short while. You see, I like my current voter enthusiasm as it is just fine, and I don't want anything to drag it down. The results of this election are too important to me and to my family and to this nation's future for me to live or die by any poll other than the one that will take place on November 6. I want Democrats to win the Presidency, retain the senate and take back the house. I'm not sure if looking at downward polls is going to help me be more Fired up than I currently am. I don't have energy to spare to do battle with the insidious effect that looking at a bunch of polls gathered by a bunch of unreliable and/or reliable polling outfits might have on me. I can't take that chance of feeding into a possible self-prophecy that may eventually lead to an election result that would be extremely detrimental to our world's long term well being.

Make no mistake; this election result will impact the lives of all Americans, and the world beyond. None of what comes before this election (especially so close leading to it) is a game meant to entertain us in anyway. I also don't believe that posting polls and commenting on them endlessly is to be considered as "activism" that will get us where we want to go. It is a passive activity at best. I know that if I am ever asked, "what did you do to help our candidates get elected", my answer won't be....."I monitored the polling".

When someone in the real world has asked me about the polls, my answer has always been....."I'm too busy trying to get my party elected to find the time to read up on all of the results which appears to be changing by the minute, based on nothing more than an aggressive media which refuses to put the country before their profits".

Pundits from both sides of the aisle have lauded Mitt Romney’s strong debate performance, praising his preparedness and ability to challenge President Obama’s policies and accomplishments. But Romney only accomplished this goal by repeatedly misleading viewers. He spoke for 38 minutes of the 90 minute debate and told at least 27 myths:

1) “[G]et us energy independent, North American energy independent. That creates about 4 million jobs”

2) “I don’t have a $5 trillion tax cut. I don’t have a tax cut of a scale that you’re talking about.”

3) “My view is that we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class. But I’m not going to reduce the share of taxes paid by high-income people.”

4) “My — my number-one principal is, there will be no tax cut that adds to the deficit. I want to underline that: no tax cut that adds to the deficit.”

5) “I will not under any circumstances raise taxes on middle-income families. I will lower taxes on middle-income families. Now, you cite a study. There are six other studies that looked at the study you describe and say it’s completely wrong.”

6) “I saw a study that came out today that said you’re going to raise taxes by $3,000 to $4,000 on middle-income families.”


7) “And the reason is because small business pays that individual rate; 54 percent of America’s workers work in businesses that are taxed not at the corporate tax rate, but at the individual tax rate….97 percent of the businesses are not — not taxed at the 35 percent tax rate, they’re taxed at a lower rate. But those businesses that are in the last 3 percent of businesses happen to employ half — half of all the people who work in small business.”

About that Debate last Night...after much thought, I will admit.....

that everyone's assessment about last night's debate is somewhat accurate,

Sure...perhaps some got it almost right,
and perhaps some got it almost wrong...
but in the end y'all are simply super marvelous folks who want to win.....
and there ain't nothing wrong with that!!!!!

But here's the thing--this election ain't about who on our side is close to right about the debates
and who on our side is close to wrong about the debates....

This election is about each of us doing whatever we can in supporting and electing Democrats
in order to make sure that our future and that of our children's doesn't turn to total shit!
That's the goal, IMO....
not how insightful and totally right or wrong folks on this board analyzed last night's debate.

In otherwords, this election is about all of us. About our future and that of our children.

Let us not lose sight on what is important in this election, and let us remember how one voice can change a room,
and one room can change a block, and one block can change a neighborhood, and one neighborhood
can change a city, and one city can change a state, and one state can change the country, and how
one country can change the world.

This election is about how our votes pooled together should end with us having a victory,
and how we all have to pull our collective weight to get that done till the fat guy sings
that its over.

LET'S KEEP OUR EYES ON THAT PRIZE, k?

So as I end my own selfish rant, I just want to say that
I'm fucking fired up, and I'm fucking ready to go!
And what about you? Are you fired up and ready to go? Cause if not, you need to be....
remember that there are many folks depending on the actions of many folks as our future hangs in the balance

Twitter: Romney's 'Big Bird' reference explodes online

According to Twitter, two of the most popular moments in the first 40 minutes of the debate were both references made by Romney, while discussing some of the federal subsidies he would cut as president.


Looking directly at moderator Jim Lehrer, the host of PBS's "NewsHour," Romney said he would cut subsidies for PBS, even though he likes Big Bird.

"Big Bird" and "PBS" each earned 17,000 tweets per minute, Twitter reports. That's nowhere near the high Twitter traffic during Obama's speech to the Democratic National Convention, which hit 52,757 tweets per minute, but it's more than Romney earned during his nomination acceptance speech at the GOP Convention, which hit a high of 14,289 tweets per minute. None of those numbers indicate whether users were for or against Romney on the "Big Bird" subsidies.

Romney lied his ass off, CNN skewed their insta-poll, and Ed-MSNBC blamed Obama.....

and many folks here articulated their "disappointment" in Pres. OBama.

Just want to say...."thank you for that".....cause some things never get old!

Like me.....Anyone who is concerned about their future and is close or in their mid 50s

heard the President making the Medicare point about the fact
that Romney will be gutting Medicare,
Most likely doesn't think that Mitt won this debate.

In fact, most folks listening to the issues brought up at the debate,
realized after the debate that they are just as confused as heck as
to what Mitt will do and how,
and are very clear that this President has their back.

That is all.

Romney with his red upper lip, his beady eyes tearing up, and the weird way

in which he acted like a 13 year old excited school girl (including his walk),
combined with his many reversals of his own proposed policies,
including many lies didn't do it for me....

For those who think he won, I'm glad that it did it for you.
