Earlier today, we find out that Senator Sanders has been using a private charter jet, the gulfstream 200 to travel to events across the country. The majority of the Bernie Sander's supporters are shrugging their shoulders and saying this isn't a big deal.
However, when it comes to Hillary Clinton, there is a double standard. Bernie Sander's supporters gleefully attacked and attacked again Clinton for using a private jet to travel.
The hypocrisy is oozing from the Bernie Sander's supporters. They vehemently shrug off Bernie Sander's usuage of a private jet to travel around, but they attack Secretary Clinton viciously for using a private jet.
The double standard is astounding and sickening. I would like a mea culpa and apology from the Bernie Sander supporters to the Clinton supporters.

(11,366 posts)Why can't she fly first class?
She has before.
http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/even-when-flying-the-public-clinton-keeps-it-private
MADem
(135,425 posts)Why -- and this is key -- do YOU give a shit?
Please explain this? I'd really like to know why this matters to you so much. And then, after you gripe about her flying privately, you offer a link that shows her flying commercially on a "no class" airline--and you're still squawking? It's not like you're paying for her travel, so why do you care? These are CAMPAIGN expenditures--if her campaign can afford it, get OVER it -- or donate more to Bernie so HE can fly privately (as he has been doing, lately) too.
You think--in a hairshirt kind of way--that it's PREFERABLE for Clinton to disrupt commercial air transportation during a busy travel season, when clearly she has the resources available to NOT be a pest and get all those poor people on those cheap tickets bumped? Or would you PREFER that she do that, so you've got something else to complain about?
She used to take the Delta shuttle all the time when she was a Senator--so did Bill, when he was the "husband of a Senator." Of course, if someone had to wait for the next shuttle, or if they didn't 'put on' an extra or larger plane to accommodate the people who got shoved to the back of the line, there'd be whining.
So--she's damned if she does, and damned if she doesn't? She can hire a private plane, and charge it to her campaign, or she can go commercial, and charge her protective detail's tickets to We, The People.
IIRC, the government only pays for Business Class--not First. Your linked article talks about Clinton riding in a plane that has NO "classes" so I don't understand why you're even talking about first class and then offering a link that says The EXACT OPPOSITE. From YOUR link:
Upon arrival, Clinton and her entourage were quickly whisked off the plane. Inside, Chicagos OHare airport, she was almost immediately surrounded by onlookers and fans. She paused for a few selfies and to shake some hands, but an aide told fans they were in a rush and Clinton got moving.
The former secretary of state pulled her own black wheeled suitcase with a pink purse balanced on top. Over her should hung a green tote bag from Lardees, a small gift shop she visited earlier in the afternoon where she purchased a book and two toys.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)But I have a question. Has she used commercial air travel at all, or only jets?
Campaigns are hectic and schedules can be damning, and Bernie is trying to stay in the senate where his job is, which means trying to get places quickly for campaign events and then get home quickly too. And he has a larger entourage now than at the beginning, so trying to get everyone to the campaign events quickly is getting harder as we get closer to the primary.
So, it's understandable that jets are becoming the most efficient way to travel. Still, when not necessary, Bernie still chooses to travel by commercial plane and not in first class. I admire that in him.
Has Hill done that since she lived in the White house? I doubt it.

(30,058 posts)Do a search, many knows where she started and where she went, it was on the news cycles.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)OK, she took a road trip (over 1000 miles) by scooby van. That is not the same thing as driving from point A (New York) to point B (Iowa) without stops in between. It would be impractical to take a road trip without using it for many stops on the way...which is the purpose of a road trip.
Sanders probably doesn't have the time to do a road trip like that, as he is still trying to maintain his Senate job. Hillary has all the time she needs...she does not have a job.

(135,425 posts)As they should be.
I didn't ask, of course. I took my seat and shut up. Post Nahn Wun Wun, especially, there was a prohibition against doing ANYTHING on that shuttle, pretty much--you had to stay seated until you were way the hell away from DC, and way before you got there--and there were air marshals on most if not all flights too back then. In effect, if you were a smart commuter, you peed before you got on the plane, you put on your seatbelt, and you didn't get up until the plane landed and they allowed you to unfasten that seatbelt and deplane.
I will say, she looked ABFAB in person--her eyes are very blue and she had skin like BUTTAH!!! She didn't ask for any special treatment, didn't pester the FAs, and she looked like she was doing work enroute.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)Than protecting her on a large commercial airliner. The smaller the situation to be contained, the easier. I would not expect her to travel on a large commercial airliner with SS. I really wish it wasn't necessary for people to have to have security for life, after they left office. I know I would not want that in my life.

(146,392 posts)Presidential candidates use private jets. They have to. They have too many places to go that aren't served well by the airlines, frankly. Nobody should be criticizing any presidential candidate for using them during campaigns. Period.
Bernie flies commercial flights when he can. That doesn't make him a better candidate.
Hypocrisy? Of course. That's the name of the game when it comes to politics. Praise the one you like and bash the one you don't. It's just too damned bad, I think.
Absolutely right nothing at all wrong with using a means of transportation that fits the need. They all do it when necessary..
rogerashton
(3,920 posts)It is absurd to criticize a candidate for using private jets. But it doesn't seem to take very much to set off the outrage reflex on the part of Hillariacs. The regular use of private jets is connected to money, and there is a real difference between the candidates on the source of their money. The jet is only symbolic of the money, of course -- and yes, symbolism is always part of politics -- but that doesn't make it hypocrisy. So, quite right, there will be no apology because none would be appropriate. Nevertheless, thanks for your measured position.

(14,193 posts)We don't agree on candidates, but jeez...some of your compadres are reaching so far its embarrassing.
I would go even further that you. Hillary is also an ex-First Lady. She SHOULD be traveling with a little more security, like a private jet, than other candidates. This is a red herring issue.
But to paint all Bernie supporters as "hypocrites" because a few of the more enamored had complained and now a Hillary supporter finds one example of the same behaviour on the "other" side? It smacks of desperation and pettiness. And it also reminds me of a favorite Republican reflection tactic: "but but but, THEY do it too!"
Both the more ardent Sanders supporters, and the enamored Hillary backers, should stop deifying their choice so completely that even vehicles of transportation before the primaries becomes an issue to decide national leadership abilities.

Bernie Sanders has entered a new stage of his campaign. The Vermont senator, who is running for president on a populist message and often speaks passionately about environmental issues, was for months regularly seen flying in coach class on commercial flights.
There is even a community of photos on Twitter, under the hashtag #SandersOnAPlane, where fans have posted photos after seeing him fly. There will likely be fewer photos of a luggage-wielding Sanders moving forward.
This holiday season, Sanders changed his routine and flew almost exclusively on private chartered planes with members of his traveling staff -- taking at least four trips.
Most recently, the campaign confirmed, a Gulfstream 200, took the Senator and some staff from Burlington, Vermont two days after Christmas and then from Las Vegas, Nevada to Moline, Illinois for campaign events in eastern Iowa this week.
snip
"ABC News asked Sanders about whether the extremely high per-person carbon footprint of private planes was consistent with his staunch environmental policies. Sanders often talks about the need for bold action on climate change and even criticized the recent international Paris Accord for not going far enough to curb carbon emissions.
The carbon footprint? As opposed to what? the 74-year-old Senator said recently. We are trying to get around Iowa and get around the country as best we can. So we have a lot of people to see and that is the best way can do it.

(116,353 posts)(except for sarcasm occasionally when somebody's gone off the rails). We have a stupid political campaign "system" (if you want to even call it a system) that obligates candidates to visit various obscure locations for months, especially so as to press the flesh of early primary voters. Stuck with this ridiculous situation, the candidates have to resort to the most efficient means of transportation available, which in most cases will be chartered jets. The fact that Bernie has often chosen to fly coach on a commercial airline is admirable, but during the holiday season he probably couldn't get a short-notice ticket to anywhere at any cost. So he chartered. I don't care. If Hillary always flies on a chartered jet, I don't care about that either. Since she gets Secret Service protection it would probably be difficult and disruptive to everyone concerned if she tried for the center seat on some airline's old MD-88. And as one who has worked in the airline industry for years, I'm always happy to hear about some circumstance that means another pilot has a job.

(928 posts)Bernie hires a plane during the busiest travel season to make sure he arrives to all his stops and you call this hypocrisy?
And you want an apology?
There are bigger things to be outraged about.

(7,006 posts)Another January Meltdown. Remember what happened the last time a Clinton Campaign had a meltdown in January....2008....
A series of comments from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, her husband and her supporters are spurring a racial backlash and adding a divisive edge to the presidential primary as the candidates head south to heavily African-American South Carolina.
The comments, which ranged from the New York senator appearing to diminish the role of Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement an aide later said she misspoke to Bill Clinton dismissing Sen. Barack Obamas image in the media as a fairy tale generated outrage on black radio, black blogs and cable television. And now they've drawn the attention of prominent African-American politicians.
A cross-section of voters are alarmed at the tenor of some of these statements, said Obama spokeswoman Candice Tolliver, who said that Clinton would have to decide whether she owed anyone an apology.
Theres a groundswell of reaction to these comments and not just these latest comments but really a pattern, or a series of comments that weve heard for several months, she said. Folks are beginning to wonder: Is this really an isolated situation, or is there something bigger behind all of this?

The Internal Campaign Hillary Statistics Must Be Experiencing Many Moments of Deja Vu.......

(11,197 posts)This has to be the hands down most juvenile attack to appear yet. I smell a hint of desperation in the air, no doubt about it.

(20,824 posts)Blah blah blah.
I'd like an apology from the Hillary campaign for the gazillion desperate begging emails I got yesterday claiming gloom and doom and weeping and wailing over not being able to raise enough money and acting like she was the only one entitled to donations and how dare I donate to anyone else, especially Sanders. They knew damn well they weren't in any fundraising danger.
Now I will certainly support and vote for her if she turns out to be the nominee. But until she's officially the nominee, I will support and donate to whatever Democrat I damn well please. Too bad for Hillary and the OP that that ain't her right now.

The is all predictible from Sanders. though. Say one thing to the crowds for the applause lines, then do something else. Gimmicky. Bait and switch.

She's used private jets far more (without any excuse) than Bernie.

Other slimy memes in which Clinton is actually far, far worse:
SuperPACs: Clinton has a ton. Bernie has a sort-of, kind-of one that's actually a union who is still a union, but is classified as a PAC under the new CU rules.
Race Relations: Clinton scolds BLM, used racist dog whistles in 2008, but Bernie is a white guy from a white state.
Feminism: Clinton, through her support of her husband's welfare "reform" bill kicks poor women and children off welfare, but Bernie is a guy who frequently used the term "shouting at each other" in his discussion about gun control and wasn't directing it at Hillary's vagina.
Talk about oozing hypocrisy!

I'd go with whatever hyperbolic adjective works best. Vehemently is good I guess. I'm still trying to imagine what that might look like... a vehement shrug. That oughta look mighty funny.

(24,853 posts)I've seen an entire video with young people doing things like that and it blew me away. That's discipline and dedication right there. To a degree I'm afraid I could never master.
Sometimes I imagine what the world might be like if THOSE people were in line to direct the future of our country and our world rather than rich punks and punkettes currently binge drinking at some Ivy League institution.
And when I imagine it... the future looks brighter than it does otherwise.

(135,425 posts)The picture used to illustrate this sanctimonious thread about Sanders flying coach very plainly shows him on some sort of luxury bus with fancy leather seats (looks like the "Limo Liner" I take to NYC on occasion--very nice, with TV and wifi), not a coach seat in a plane.
Unless you can open windows on planes, now? Check out those "plane" windows in this picture! LOL! Who wouldn't love that kind of legroom in coach!!
Poor guy looks like he burned his tongue on that coffee--or maybe it's just indigestion.....
