Paul Ryan took the biggest negative nose-dive in national opinion post-conventions

Criticism dominates online chatter for Paul Ryan

Paul Ryan took the biggest negative nose-dive in national opinion post-conventions, according to an analysis of Twitter and Facebook posts between Aug. 27 and Sept. 10.

Ryan saw the biggest swing in online sentiment post-convention of any of the other major convention speakers, according to NBC Politics in association with the social media monitoring firm Crimson Hexagon, in a report released Tuesday. Mentions of the Wisconsin congressman online dropped fromalmost 50 percent positive conversations, at the end of the Republican convention, to the mid-30s by the end of the Democratic one, with negative mentions spiking to more than 60 percent.

In comparison, President Obama, Mitt Romney and Vice President Joe Biden all stayed about the same in a gauge of negative versus positive chatter throughout the two weeks of conventions, with positive vs. negative sentiment moving no more than four points on any given day.

The analysis indicates that while the GOP convention introduced Ryan as the Republican vice presidential nominee to a national audience, the Democrats successfully interfered in his debut.

Democrats’ rapid response to Ryan’s speech on the second night of the GOP convention successfully put their criticism at the forefront of the next day’s analysis, in a narrative that has continued to dominate conversation about Ryan’s convention speech.

it's coming out. He does best taking to people that know nothing with just his rhetoric and inane talking points. He's a wet paper bag.

The look in his eyes. That fast way he talks. The way he says the interviewers name over and over. Even repubs must know they picked a loser.

reminded me of someone making a presentation while standing on bullshit. Just watching him, at least to me, it was obvious he was treading water and knew he was sinking. He talks gibberish and it ends there. He might get applause from a know-nothing crowd, but IMO it ends there. Biden will dismantle him in debates.

5. This might be the best thing to happen in this election, even when Obama wins.

The marginalization of Paul Ryan is important. I think this guy is serious bad news. The lying about his marathon time was very telling for me. It spoke of ego run amok. Fortunately, his ambition spurred him into accepting the VP nod this time around and that should hopefully end his national political aspirations.

7. Ryan's talking about the secret plan to close loopholes is pure gold for our side.

I hope he and Romney continue to talk about the reasons their plan must be secret. I especially like it when they suggest that their plan must be secret for the sake of avoiding secrecy.

An excerpt from the post:

...All this is true: Romney is coming under fire from fellow Republicans for not being sufficiently specific, and these attacks do reinforce preexisting story lines about Romney's lack of core beliefs. But I don't believe for a second that Romney's Republican critics actually care about whether and to what extent he offers specific policy proposals. Instead, they care about establishing a narrative to explain his defeat—a narrative that places the blame for that defeat squarely on his shoulders.

For professional conservatives, the only thing more important than winning the 2012 presidential election is not getting blamed for losing it. And as much as they might be disappointed by a Romney defeat this November, the thing that would actually crush their souls would be if Romney were to lose and their ideas were assigned the blame. Better to throw him under the bus now, even if it means he's less likely to win, than to suffer that fate.
