Republicans believe in "local control" & "small government" as much as they believe in. . .
Edited on Sun Apr-17-11 08:06 AM by Faryn Balyncd

...."balanced budgets", "fiscal responsibility", due process, and "the rule of law".

If anything is remarkable, perhaps it is that they appear to be so trusting in the ability of their propaganda machine to continue to hold their true believers that they now show no fear of openly and unambiguously displaying their true fascist colors.

Rick Ungar in Forbes: Gov. Scott Walker Reportedly Planning Financial Martial Law In Wisconsin

Reports are surfacing that Scott Walker is now preparing his next assault on the democratic political process in the State of Wisconsin. Following the lead of Michigan GOP Governor Rick Snyder, Walker is said to be preparing a plan that would allow him to force local governments to submit to a financial stress test with an eye towards permitting the governor to take over municipalities that fail to meet with Walker’s approval. According to the reports, should a locality’s financial position come up short, the Walker legislation would empower the governor to insert a financial manager of his choosing into local government with the ability to cancel union contracts, push aside duly elected local government officials and school board members and take control of Wisconsin cities and towns whenever he sees fit to do so....

...Yes, this has really happened right here in the United States of America.

Walker’s plans give further credence to the notion that the efforts of the GOP governors with Republican majorities in their state legislative bodies are part of a coordinated plan to enforce a right-wing agenda designed to not only destroy state, county and municipal employee unions, but to take control of local governments by replacing elected officials with appointees, both corporate and individual, of the state’s highest executive officer.

ALEC: Bringing the vast rightwing corporate conspiracy to a legislature near you

www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x591230

The right wing likes to pretend to believe in decentralized government, often illustrated by quotes from their patron saint Ronald Reagan:

"Our Founding Fathers devised a system of government unique in all the world – a federation of sovereign States, with as much law and decision-making authority as possible kept at the local level."

"...These are the values inspiring those brave workers in Poland. The values that have inspired other dissidents under Communist domination who have been willing to go into the Gulag and suffer the torture of imprisonment because of their dissidence. They remind us that where free unions and collective bargaining are forbidden, freedom is lost. They remind us that freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction..."

—Ronald Reagan, Labor Day Address at Liberty State Park, 1980

The Tea Party, like all Reagan worshippers, have the "small government", "local control" rhetoric down pat.

But, thanks to the Koch Brothers' "American Legislative Exchange Council" and Governors Rick Snyder & Scott Walker, the mask is coming off.

1. Help! I know this is the product of a think tank...it was named in
a couple of weeks ago when this idea was rammed through the Michigan legislature.

Anyone know what it's name was?

4. Thanks.
I remembered ALEC, but somehow I thought it wasn't them...maybe that was some other terrible enabling act reported out of Michigan.

Scarry how some f'ing desk jockey has written the model legislation for all this. What's to gain? It MUST be more than just dissolving local government. It seems like it MUST be more than putting in a Kulak so that Walmarts can go into every middling town and hamlet.

But what? WHAT? the hell are they fixing to steal?

5. It's privitization of public assets.
Not the crappy assets...the ones with real value. Once they have their Viceroy's calling the shots, then the sweetheart deals to sell-off these assets to the people bankrolling their elections, for pennies on the dollar, can move forward unencumbered.

3. They read Orwell and said ....Hey this is a good idea.
Just claim that you are for freedom as you stamp it out every where you see it.
Say you are for law and order as you violate every law you can.
It is called doublespeak, and they have brainwashed their followers into buying it lock stock and barrel.

12. Yes, exactly so.
They saw Orwell's nightmares as a training manual and called it good. :(

6. President Obama reportedly planning financial martial law in US
Wonder what they'd say if the article read like this-

"...should a state's financial position come up short, the Obama legislation would empower the president to insert a financial manager of his choosing into state government with the ability to cancel union contracts, push aside duly elected state government officials and school board members and take control of American states whenever he sees fit to do so....

10. Hey Republicans since Reagan have wanted..........
to get government off of your back. And into your bedroom. Now, it looks like they want to get government into your pockets too.

11. Thanks for linking to my compilation topic on ALEC! Did you see today's topic on the 2009 SCOTUS
ruling ALEC applauded (after they filed an amicus curiae brief to participate), which the ALEC press release said "reaffirmed the rightful authority of states over local government entities"?

Re financial martial law: a 2009 SC ruling that ALEC praised & was involved with makes it easier

You're right -- Republicans DON'T believe in local control and small government.

14. I think that they know.. this whole thing is going to blow ...fairly soon..
The ruling class knows that the $33 Trillion in derivatives is going to blow fairly soon.

They have soiled their nest.. and there is no turning back.

What they must do now.. is surpress the American worker.. and convince people that hunger is a good thing.

I don't think it is going to work this time.....
