Illegal immigrants in US Marine uniforms arrested

SAN DIEGO — Border Patrol agents caught 13 illegal immigrants wearing U.S. Marine uniforms at a border patrol checkpoint east of San Diego, an agency spokesman said Tuesday.

The immigrants were in a white van that was stopped March 14 along Interstate 8, Border Patrol spokesman Michael Jimenez said. The van had a U.S. government license plate with an altered number, Jimenez said. He did not know where the group obtained the military uniforms.

The immigrants all had Marine-style haircuts and the name tag "Perez" on their camouflage uniforms, U.S. Marine Corps officials told the Los Angeles Times.

The van driver and another man, both U.S. citizens, were arrested on suspicion of alien smuggling, the Border Patrol said. Three of the immigrants were being held in federal custody as witnesses and the others were returned to Mexico, their country of origin, Jimenez said.

3033.1: Name/service tapes will be worn on the green and desert camouflage utility uniforms, combat utility uniforms, and the maternity camouflage work uniform. The camouflage utility uniform name and service tapes will be of olive green cloth, one inch wide, with embroidered 3/4 inch high black block lettering, except that tapes for the desert utility uniform will utilize brown lettering on a tan background. The combat utility uniform name and service tapes will be of the same MARPAT material as the uniform it is sewn on to, with embroidered 3/4 inch high black (for woodland combat utilities) and brown (for desert combat utilities) block lettering. If necessary to accommodate longer names the lettering may be in condensed print, 1/2 inch high. Nametapes will include the individual's last name only in upper case letters. Service tapes will be inscribed with "U.S. MARINES" in upper case letters, with a space before "MARINES."

In addition:

3019.1: No valid general requirement for nametags exists; however, the standard black Marine Corps nametag may be prescribed at the option of local commanders at schools, conferences, and related activities. Marines assigned to non-Marine Corps commands or schools may wear nonstandard nametags, without prior CMC approval, if they are similar in size and shape to standard Marine Corps nametags and are required by the local commander.

3019.2: The standard Marine Corps nametag will be of flexible thermo-plastic translucent base material with black velvet mar-resistant, non-glare finished surface and a white core, as sold by approved sources. When prescribed by commanders, nametags and engraving services will be procured according to the current edition of MCO P4200.15, utilizing local command funds. The tag is 5/8 inch wide by 3 inches long with clutch-type fastener. Engraved white block-type lettering will be 3/8 inch high by about 3/16 inch wide (unless it must be smaller to accommodate a lengthy name within standard length) indicating the Marine's last name only. Symbols, initials, nicknames, or organizational identification will not be placed on nametags. Wearing nametags that do not conform with these provisions, except as noted above, is prohibited.
