A bit of a break here from Libya, Japan, Scott Walker and the rest - Happy Birthday to a couple dudes who have provided us with a lot of good memories. Nobody's perfect, and neither are they, but that pales compared to the good stuff they have given us.

Live long and prosper indeed, gentlemen.

32. And their show, with women and minorities in responsible positions,
was very meaningful to girls like me who could think about being something other than a teacher, nurse, or full-time "homemaker".

Truly, truly. It's hard to remember back that far, but we saw limited options for ourselves and actually didn't think much about it. It was the environment we were in. Boys did these things and girls did other things. After all, a fish doesn't think about the water that it swims in.

But Star Trek started showing an alternate reality. It got me asking some questions and looking for different opportunities, ones I might never have thought of without that show.

I'm so grateful for it and then other shows that presented different views. TV can really affect our culture. In this case, I think it was very good.

123. Martin Luther King said exactly that to Lt. Uhura, Nichelle Nichols:
n 1967, Nichols had been contemplating leaving the then-unpopular TV series to return to the theatre, but King persuaded her to stay on. As she recalls in the video above, King said, "Your character is the first non-stereotypical role on television ... people see for the first time as we should be seen, as equals ... Star Trek has changed the face of television."

35. Wow, were there only 3 seasons? Seems like it lasted much longer.
I remember going to Star Trek conventions in LA in the mid 70's. They were smaller then and lots of fun.

I had a big poster on my office wall with a matrix of dialogue from the characters in the show. You could use the matrix to write an episode. But Bones only line was "He's dead, Jim" with on the occasional "She's dead, Jim" or "It's dead, Jim".

It's terrific to be able to pop one on when there's nothing else on TV and we're in the mood for a good show.

56. If humanity survives this disappointing and, in many ways, appalling era (1980 to the present)
it will be partly because of the ideals of peaceful adventure, peaceful resolution of problems, fairness, equality, curiosity and rational thought that Star Trek inspired in so many people--with that remarkable show in the early 1960s, quite revolutionary for and in its day, and by the follow-up show, Star Trek: the Next Generation, through Season 5, when Star Trek's remarkable creator, Gene Roddenberry, died. The soul quickly drained out of Star Trek after that. Next Generation Seasons 6-7, Deep Space 9 and the rest may have some entertaining moments, but the progressive fervor of the show died with Roddenberry. And I should mention the Star Trek movies which Leonard Nimoy had such an important role in creating. The return of the original Star Trek crew in the movies, after such a long absence, was pure magic (--magic that also did not get passed forward after Roddenberry's death).

But, oh my, when Roddenberry was alive, and actors like Shatner, Nimoy, Patrick Stewart (Capt. Picard) and Brent Spiner (Cmdr Data) took on those roles, with Roddenberry-inspired scripts, Star Trek became the School For How To Be A Human Being! This is hardly taught any more in the academy of public culture. Battlestar Galactic comes close, at times--but it reflects a shattered rather than a hopeful world. Roddenberry's was a hopeful world in which it was POSSIBLE to rise out of our greed and selfishness and myopia and create a better society. He really had the vision. He really laid it out--in a totally unusual way.

Shatner, I adore. There is something about him that is as special and utterly unique as Roddenberry was as a thinker and creator. I love him for his awful music recordings. I love him for his awful commercials. I especially love him for "Boston Legal" (not awful; quite good actually). And, as Mr. Ikon for Star Trek, he is insurpassable as the Cosmic Joke of the Millennium: the reality vs. the ideal! He will NOT be idealized. I love him for this! He is my hero for NOT being a hero and for having NO pretensions whatsoever. None! How PERFECT he is at being FLAWED! Ah! He is divine. He really is.

Nimoy, yeah. I don't know if it's love. How can you not like an actor who turned out to be as intelligent as Mr. Spock. Great respect is what I feel. (I feel NO RESPECT for Shatner! None! What a clown! He just makes me laugh. Just thinking about him makes me laugh. Respect isn't an option. It's irrelevant.) Nimoy created the greatest Star Trek story of all: "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" (about the whale). That was truly the perfection of the Roddenberry world view--that there is hope for humanity. With Nimoy, I feel more like he really is Spock and that he would be rather intimidating to meet. He might expect you to live up to Roddenberry's ideals!

I wonder if these are the two sides of Gene Roddenberry--Shatner/Kirk vs Nimoy/Spock. One, a shameless clown. The other, a Headmaster who holds you and everyone in his school to the highest standards of human conduct.

Then there are Picard and Data. Fascinating studies of what it is to be human, what it is to be just, what it is to be educated, what it is to be innocent, what it is to be in command.

Star Trek could be the best that our culture has produced. Happy birthday to two of its ikons! (or rather to Ikon and Anti-Ikon!)

120. Fascinating train of thought here.
I find your possible thesis to be quite fascinating. You may be onto something in the Spock/Kirk personalities as aspects of Roddenberry. Whatever, I love Star Trek all of it in its entirety but especially the original. Long live Kirk and Spock. Happy Birthday to both Mr. Shatner and Mr. Nimoy -- two gentlemen for whom I have immense respect.

Live long and prosper!

wow, 80 year old.... And he looks like at least 15 year younger...

He might also be the "greatest" of the main characters in Star Trek, even tho its exist a few great actors who have personalized characters in that universe...

Star Trek was, and are still great movies, and series where the human race have going from beeing savage, to sivilized and peacefully.. And to discover what is beyound the next corner... A lot of danger a lot of mystery, and a lot of fun..

The Star Trek universe wil maybe not live forever, as the actors from the orginal crew dies out... But the idea, and the movies and series wil outlive them many years... And by 2233, we might be somewhere near the ideal who Gene Roddenderry was made as posible future.. A future where collour, race, and country, are not a issue, as we work toghterer for noble goals...

80 years, thats old... But what a run they have had.. Mr Shatner is maybe more famous than mr Nimrod, but they wil allway be rembembered, long after they all are dead and in their graves... As one of the best actors in the Star Trek universe... The new generations of today, have some great boots to fill.. And to be honest.. The last Star Trek movie, was not that great.. Even tho it was a lot of actions, and the scenes was great.. It was just not what I expected from Star Trek...

Oh, wel... I guess it was not made for me, but for the younger crowds who are not so into the older stuff...

87. Star Trek ... will we ever BOLDLY GO there?
I've always loved Star Trek because it portrays a positive future in which the human race has overcome most of the destructiveness and injustice that plagues our history on this planet.

I used to be optimistic that we would someday BOLDLY GO where Captain Kirk (and later, Captain Picard) took us on television and in our imaginations. Sadly, that dream -- rooted in the American Dream -- seems to be fading away.

Yes we wil go out there, and discover that the universe is greater, more amazing that we ever could imagine from our planet.. But it wil take longer time than we belived...

But we WIL go out there, we have to, its the human thing to do. to discover and to travel, even tho iit wil take a longer time than we ever belived.. We wil go there, where no man have ever going before. But it wil take some time, posible longer than we wil live... but we wil be there, sooner or later...

But I did expect it.

I like your optimism, and perhaps it is well founded.

The troubles of the moment -- even if they get worse -- will fade away and be replaced with a new paradigm. History is a very long road, and with any luck our future will be longer O8)

True, when I was young I also belived it when I was older I could travel in space. Or at least travel to the moon.. Oh wel, maybe not in our time, but in our childrens time.. Many thing can happend the next 50-100 year or so. And even when I doubt that we as humans have a future I must hope for the best..

And I still belive in humans... We do have a enormous future if we just manage to get out of our trobles of today.. We must change how we treat eatch outer..

Humans have allways had times when troubles are deep and the world is a scary place right now.. A lot of wars, and a lot of rumors of wars.. Its not good but I do hope, that we can go true this, and wake up to a better future.. Maybe not excactly in the way mr Roddenderry wanted but at least in some aspect as he would told in the 1960s. If we managed to discover that for a better future we have to work togheter as one.. Then we wil go a long way in the right directions...

And I do belive, even if it wil never happend in our time, that humans wil travel a part of our galaxcy the same way they do in Star Trek.. The theory behind Faster Than Light speed is facinating to say aleast.. And even tho we for the moment do not have the tools to get any thing near that consept in reality, sientic minded peopole have doing a lot of theoretical recharch into the idea.. And it sound solid enough.. Even tho I don't understhand 1/3 of what is told..

We have solved a lot of troubles the last 5000-6000 year with written history.. And for some reason I do belive we as humans wil have a long future and have the posibility to write a lot of history before the end is near.. The universe is a big place, and it have allways been natural for humans to explore..

If we just desided to work togheter and stop wasting money of our horrible wars who is just a waste of time and ressourses.. The universe IS the limit.. Not just figurative, but literally.. And I hope, I belive that the galaxy is full of life, from the smallest bacteria, to humanoids and others who have evolved from other types of life..

Our future IS bright.. But we have to go true a dark, ugly tunel before the light is there again.. The next decade or two wil be hard og not easy to get true... But we wil, and then the sky is the limit again.. We have to shoose a different path, the next generation are our future, and should be given the posibility to shoose between what we have today, and a brighter, better future.. We are on a long road, the future is bright, and our ancestors wil in time, look back on us, in the same way we might look up on our forfathers from a long distant history.. Naive, good and bad persons.. Who belived they did what was best for them..

And they might even read our little "thinking" and in a kind way thing.. How opptimistic, even tho the history books was telling that they as living in a hard world, where war and nuclear accidents was plentifull. And where they was on a verge of a ecological chatastrophe for a long time... Even then, they managed to hope that the future would be better than the past..

It's just moving somewhere else for right now. Perhaps the future isn't rooted in America even if it is rooted in some of the American ideals.

... but still out there just over the horizon B-)

You're right about Star Trek representing some of the American ideals, but not necessarily the American Dream.

That Dream needs to evolve just as our country and our world -- and human civilization -- needs to evolve.

We're in a devolving phase right now, but that will pass.

89. ST-TOS was a turning point for me as a teenager
I was a bit too young for the NBC run, but it was on five nights a week on the local independent station back in the early 1970s.

Watching that show, I saw for the first time someone who acted and thought like I did. It was, of course, Spock. I'd never seen or met anyone remotely like Spock before and the show made me feel a little less alone in a world where I had always know I was different - and was often made to pay a high price for that difference.

And wouldn't you just know I got my Asperger's dX when I was in my mid-40s.

Thanks, Mr. Nimoy, for bringing such a wonderful character to life and giving us non-neurotypicals a role model.

(Even though Data was an even better character and more reflective of the Aspie experience some 25 years later).
