How many millionaires build homes next to reactors?
Has anyone researched home values next to reactors? Any gated communities? Who lives next to those darlings?

1. In New York they do...
Indian Point Energy Center (IPEC) is a three-unit nuclear power plant station located in Buchanan, New York just south of Peekskill. It sits on the east bank of the Hudson River, 24 miles north of New York City. The power plant provides up to 30% of the electricity used by New York City and Westchester County.

I've kyacked in the Hudson right near the plant. Hiked Bear Mountain, which Indian Point sits at its foot. No smoot. No smog. Part of the Appalachian trail runs just the other side of the river. It's quite beautiful.

I don't know if he was a millionaire, but he had a beautiful waterfront home -- he had bought it cheap, a great deal --AND-- he did NOT have to pay any property taxes, because it's on nuclear plant property. I think this is in Conn.

I would love to hear of millionaires living near steel foundries. It would mean we still have some.

The rest of your comment was deliberately disruptive in attitude.

16. Plenty of $million homes next to Diablo Canyon, and I suspect that the main thing keeping them
away from San Onofre is Camp Pendleton - if that property was developed, I'd bet it would be beachfront mansions right up to the gate. (Looking at Zillow, for instance, the closest for-sale house I can find to SONGS is listed at $8.4M)...

Today the Republicans took a very strong pro-nuke plant stance. As did our president.

I have no idea what this will mean for coming elections. Or fundraising.

39. It should be a requirement
If you want to be a big shot limo ridin exec in the nuclear power industry then there should be a requirement to live next to one of the damn things. Drink and bathe in the local water and if it fucks up, be trained to help in the emergency and get your ass to the plant. Have a guy with a rifle watching him 24/7 and if he tries to run away when the plant fucks up, standing orders to shoot Mr Megabucks.

I bet if we had those requirements we'd find out whether they could build a truly safe plant or whether they are blowing smoke up our ass about it. One thing is for damn sure, they wouldn't be cutting any corners. ;)

31. My geology professors told a story of visiting another geology professor
In California whose house was built jutting out over a canyon on a faultline. They remonstrated with him. "Don't you know there's a fault line here?" "Of course I do." "And that an earthquake could happen at any moment?" "Of course I know." "Then why did you build here?" "The view! The view!"
