US city fires all of its teachers

Mayor of Providence criticised for sacking staff in bid to tackle $100m deficit.

-snip of video-

The mayor of Providence, the capital of the US state of Rhode Island, is facing criticism after he fired all of the city's nearly 2,000 school teachers in an effort to tackle a $100m deficit.

Not all will ultimately go, but sending dismissal notices to everyone means the city can fire teachers at the end of the school year without regard to seniority.

Angel Taveras, who only took office in January, defended the move by saying it was a necessary "protective measure" to help tackle the shortfall.

2. They weren't all fired, they were given notices that they MIGHT be fired
Under state law, they have to be notified by a certain date (probably March 1) that they will not be rehired. Rather than looking at the list of teachers, the projected enrollment and figuring out which teachers they need and which they don't, this idiotic administration decided to give termination notices to ALL of them.

This is more about dumbass administrators than anything else. We need to focus on admins more than teachers. THEY are almost always the problem.

3. They will hire back those with as few years of experience as possible.
They don't have to pay them as much, and they will be less likely to speak up when they see and hear ridiculous administrative decisions.

4. When will the protests begin there?
If they sit still for this, it is begging for more of the same.
Letters and phone calls have been proven to be totally ineffective.
I really see no option but a national strike, at this point.

6. Every teacher needs to walk out now...
Show the imbeciles up close and personal how valuable teachers are.

But they won't. Teachers care more about the children's education than many parents. I saw a pic of one of the protester's signs here on DU yesterday:

If you think education costs too much...try ignorance.
