There is a bill going through the Missouri Congress that would divert funds from public education to private education. It is estimated that it would siphon off three hundred million dollars from public education in this state, money that would go to the mostly religious private schools. Worse yet, similar propositions are now being considered in twelve other states.
"One bill would repeal the Missouri Constitution's ban on public money going to religious schools and allow parents to receive state vouchers for private schools. The other bill would enable parents, if a majority agreed, to convert a public school to a charter or get vouchers to send their children elsewhere if they're unhappy with their current school.
The constitutional amendment change could cost the state more than $300 million per year, according to a state financial estimate. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education assumed that parents of all of the state's 85,499 private school students would request such a voucher, at an average cost of $3,643 per student."
