Check in to show your solidarity with the Unions in Wisconsin
Edited on Thu Feb-17-11 02:11 PM by LynneSin
I wish I could be there to support their cause but I do support them in spirit.

I'm also an even bigger fan of Green Bay QB Aaron Rogers. That kid will probably have an amazing NFL career and make millions but he too is out there supporting the unions because he too is Union.

And what's great about the protesters in Wisconsin - I bet none of them have to bring their guns to make a statement, just their voices and their determination to be treated fairly for the work they do. They probably spell their signs correctly too.

BTW - I'm showing my solidarity by changing my DU Avatar to a Wisconsin one.

305. On Wisconsin and Union troops
from Wikipedia

"On, Wisconsin!" was the cry that Arthur MacArthur, Jr. used in the Battle of Chattanooga at Missionary Ridge during the American Civil War. He seized the regimental colors, and rallied his regiment with "On, Wisconsin!", for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

I live in Michigan. I can't NOT support unions. Especially with the Moron repug Governor that was (God knows why) just elected.

That crap needs to be stopped in Wisconsin because, if it works, we're next.

Thanks.

30. Here to support in spirit.
I have signed all the petitions offered up and am a friend of the Facebook page trying to see the last of Scott Walker.

Retired, but supported the Union when I was working.

I believe if the "masses" understood the impact the unions have had regarding working conditions of this country there would be more support. With the RW media smear of the last 30 years, "Union = Liberal". Which you know equates to "BAD". Some of the comments on the Facebook page make me shake my head in wonder and despair. How can people be so ill informed? They are willing to vote against their better interests just to say they would never support of "Liberal" idea. It is a sad state of affairs.

If Wisconsin Cop unions, State Police union and Firefighters union think Walker will stop if he is able to break other state unions, they are dead wrong. When their next contract negotiations come up, an emboldened Walker will be ready to deal with them and beat them down. Walker must be stopped politically, now.

for a couple of months, and will always have a soft spot for that place. Seeing my favorite senator, Feingold, defeated last year broke my heart, but I'm so glad to see there are still a lot of good, sensible folks in 'sconsin fighting hard for what's right.

This is how to get politicians attention. And as the op so astutely pointed out, it's likely that none of them brought their guns to make a statement. And believe me, hunting is big in Wisconsin.
So anyway, once again, SOLIDARITY! I'm changing the avatar back to Union Yes!

I'm retired now, but my ex-husband, daughter and son-in-law are all union members. And I belonged wherever I had the chance.

If they can hang in there in Wisconsin, it may --at last-- inspire those in other states. There are plenty of ways to improve state budgets without trying to bring employees down to poverty levels!

My son is among the marchers. When I saw the film of the high school students marching in support of their teachers, I cried. Gov. Walker should see the people of his state and work with them and for them, not bully them and threaten them.

Collective bargaining is a legal right in this country. Apparently Scott Walker doesn't mind taking away the rights of the people in his state. He must be one of those big government takeover types, or at least a hypocrite.

I heartily applaud their tremendous fighting spirit to stop this effort by a modern day total slimeball tool of big business interests who would return us to the days where robber barons ravaged the countryside unopposed and workers were treated as less than human and, consequently were routinely maimed and killed at work or worked to death literally. However ordinary Americans did not tolerate these grotesque efforts by the servants of mammon to enslave them. Instead workers from all walks of life overcame enormous barriers and obstacles by joining together and working together and sacrificing with blood, sweat and in many instances their lives, and ultimately erased the stain on the American soul left behind by the murdering thieves like Jay Gould, Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick. Sadly we now have to refight their battle since Rethuglicans never met a working person they did not despise and try to impoverish. The spirit of Wisconsin should be in all of us and we should oppose with every fiber of our being and every moment of our time that we can devote their contemptuous and hateful efforts to return all of us to the era of total subjugation by the rich and total deprivation of our human rights which, as we recognized as a people in the 1930's, includes the fundamental right to collectively bargain over terms and conditions of employment.

Does anyone have pragmatic suggestions? I'd really love to show my support, but have never participated in something like this. I mean if it was 50 people protesting, ordering pizzas for them for lunch comes to mind, but what can I do to help 25K people?

How 'bout some Facebook approaches:

Protect Wisconsin Families:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Protect-Wisconsin-Families/166928823355401?sk=wall

The wonderful Russ Feingold's latest:
https://www.facebook.com/ProgressivesUnited
( and there's also his www.progressivesunited.org - and I think also www.progressivesunited.com )

This is just a guess but I'd start there and look around at those sites and see if there's some local activism to help the protesters - either providing them food or blankets or transportation or donating money or whatever. Maybe your local union, AFLCIO office or some such might have a suggestion, or might be tied in to their brothers and sisters up north.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x449506

Thread about a place called Ian's Pizza in Madison, I guess, where there've been calls from all over the country from people ordering pizza to be sent to the protesters to say thank you. Somebody evidently tweeted about that.

Ideas! All great ideas! Make sure they're fed. Make sure they've got enough fresh drinking water. Whatever.

278. Solidarity with Wisconsin
Unions. I come from a family of teachers. My wife, my mom(was), my brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, my sister are union ( some building reps and officers). My brother represents a union. I can't be union because of the Yeshiva Decision. While I have a good administration and I have negotiated contracts for our faculty and our admin does it in good faith, we don't have guaranteed collective bargaining. I know the difference.

Unions don't just bargain for themselves, they help us all.

303. Worth supporting...
My husband, who was in the USS for almost 40 years, said that the protests in Wisconsin are worth supporting. He is not given to doing that most of the time so this is a big statement for him.
I on the other hand was never personally in a union but fully support those who are. It has been unions that by and large made the United States a democracy by getting collective bargaining and everything that went with that. Since so many unions have been busted we can see how our democracy has deteriorated.
Go AFSCME/SEIU and any other union now able and willing to resist corporate politicians.

313. "Je suis le roi"
I wish t hat I could be in Wisconsin with my union brothers and sisters, but my heart is there with them. These Republican clowns just can't stop proclaiming themselves king, can they? They would do with a little less bible and a little more history. Egypt was not the first peoples uprising to stem from lack of jobs and surging food prices. Lets see... I think almost every revolution in the history of mankind was born of the injustices heaped upon the "lower classes" by the Aristos. It can be pointed out that the French aristocracy did not hear the whisper of the axe until it had fallen on them. Just this week King Boner said, and I quote..."So be it" if people were to loose their jobs. If this is not a "Let them eat cake" declaration, I don't know what is. POWER TO THE PEOPLE! Power to the workers of America.

All were peaceful, friendly, courteous to the staff trying to keep things organized. My kids were really engaged for their ages. Signs spelled correctly except for one I saw that asked where Goldman "Sacks" reparations were (although that might have been intentional).

I am not a big football fan, but after the announcement of support by the Players union on Tuesday, I am buying a Packer t-shirt!

Sorry you couldn't be there. It is incredible!

Maybe we'll have an apology for the national media's absence soon too.

329. Union family member here
Born and raised in a union household. When my father passed away when I was 15 (and he was 42), the union told my Mother what to do in order to get promoted to first shift. She feared the strikes that used to occur every 3rd year of bargaining but she could raise three teenagers and provide for us with the help of survivor benefits from social security. One month before my father's fateful massive heart attack, she signed up for major medical coverage which saved us from bankruptcy and homelessness. Back then, she probably made about 3-4 bucks an hour and that was piece rate. 1975

365. K & R (#500) yea!!
I lived in Wisconsin as a child, have been a Packer fan all my life, both my parents were teachers, and I am a government employee. So of course they have my support. I wish I could be there with them in more than spirit.

370. Badger here! and FYI there are lots of other unions besides
the teachers, police and firefighters.

I didn't know there were unions for the engineers and scientist like geologists etc that work for the state.

How the hell do we have safer highways without these people?

371. Hell Yes!
Unions speak for the working men and women. Do we really expect multinational corporations and their stooges to watch out for workers?

372. I was a union member in the UK & US
We'd be in a right pickle if there had never been any unions. People forget, or have no idea, what it was like before the unions.

373. I am in favor of well-paid public servants.
We need career government workers who are invested in long term public service. Giving these people good jobs - with good wages, pension benefits, medical coverage and job security - will allow them to develop the dedication and skill set to facilitate the smooth and professional conduct of public affairs.

If we convert public sector employment to low grade, hourly jobs with few benefits or collective bargaining rights, then they'll become revolving-door jobs with no stability or continuity. If you think dealing with a government agency is tough now, then just think of what it would be like under a minimum wage, "7-11 clerk" format.

I'm mad at Republicans for their insane policies. And, I'm mad at Democrats for being spineless and not moving forward just as forcefully with their own agenda. The Wisconsin Dems are doing it right. But, nationally, we are a bunch of pussies.
