ABC's Amanpour Comes Under Attack In Cairo

Doors and windshield to car battered
By Ben Grossman -- Broadcasting & Cable, 2/2/2011 12:11:51 PM

ABC's Christiane Amanpour said Wednesday that she and a crew came under attack from a "mob" on the same day CNN's Anderson Cooper reported the same.

Amanpour wrote in a reporter's notebook released by ABC News that the attack came after trying to film on a bridge into Tahrir Square.

"An angry mob surrounded us and chased us into the car shouting that they hate America," she said. "They kicked in the car doors and broke our windshield as we drove away."

18. How do we know who they are? I'd bet they are M's gang of thugs
wanting to discredit the protestors in the eyes of Americans.

14. Let's see who's attacking the media
Edited on Wed Feb-02-11 02:58 PM by muriel_volestrangler
1904: The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes says: "... Outside on the street I was confronted by members of Egypt's ruling class - educated, articulate and angry. As we returned from Heliopolis our car was forced of the road by another group of angry men. They handed us over to the dreaded Mukhabarat - the secret police in their brown leather jackets. We were handcuffed and blindfolded and taken to an interrogation cell. Three hours later we were released onto a remote backstreet. The regime is hardening its attitude to the protestors and to the foreign media. Egypt's ruling class is fighting back."

1653: The Swedish newspaper, Aftonbladet, has also said that two of its reporters were attacked by an angry mob in a poor area of Cairo, and then detained by soldiers for several hours. One of them, Karin Oestman, said people had spat in their faces and accused them of being from Israel's foreign intelligence agency, Mossad.
...
#
1550: From the BBC's Paul Danahar: "There may now be more pro Mubarak supporters surrounding the square than anti-Mubarak supporters inside it. A number of foreign journalists have been roughed up by the crowds."
...
#
1134: From the BBC's Mark Georgiou in Cairo: "Massive pro-Mubarak demo in Cairo. People very, very worked up, time and again we were told foreign media is not being fair and the people say that, now the president is not standing for election, it's time to restore order. Lots of anti-ElBaradei feeling. It's not as simple as just the people in Tahrir Square.

CNN's Anderson Cooper attacked by Pro-Mubarak mob: 'They're beating people up on the streets'

It's the pro-Mubarak protesters who are making most of the attacks on journalists.

6. I blame them. first of all, I doubt it's the pro-democracy folks
more likely Mubarak thugs. That's who attacked Cooper.

12. Of course it was...
Pro-democracy folks need the world to see what's going on; Mubarak doesn't. These pro-democracy people seem well-educated and well-spoken. They seem quite prepared to do what it takes to take back their country. I can't help but think they would view international media in their midst as a good thing.

13. One of the risks of the job. Especially when you are trying to get literally in the middle of it.
both her and Anderson Cooper were trying to get prime spots, literally right in the middle of the fighting. Even Al-Jazeera can't get in those places. So while I don't condone violence against them, I'm not surprised at all and in fact I'm surprised there aren't more high profile newspeople deaths these days since it just seems they are trying to outdo each other who can get the closest to the action.
