4. He can say, "If the violence doesn't stop, we are pulling all financial aid immediately."
I think that would get the Army in gear, 'cause the majority of the aid we give Egypt goes directly to their armed forces.

13. I think that has already been placed on the table
actually that was discussed several days ago

Murbarak is digging his heels in and willing to take down as many Egyptians as it takes to stay in power.

It is going to take a World Outcry from the majority of the World's Leaders calling for him to step down. Talk of sending in UN Peace Keeping Troops might be persuasive, but in reality limiting the number of countries that will except him and his stolen $Millions in exile will be the strongest motivator for him to leave.

now he's not using his superpowers to change foreign Governments. Oh Noes!

9. He could threaten to freeze Egyptian assets in the U.S. and cut off all aid.
Of course, some right wing a-hole somewhere might object, so that's out. Gotta be pragmatic, you know. Can't make waves.

8. I sincerely wish we could help...
But what can anyone do at this point? The army can't fire on protesters because it will hit peaceful people. If the US came in, whatever we did would be seen at interfering and unwelcome and we would be blamed for all negative outcomes.

I am so angry. I hope they pull Mubarak out of hiding and hang him until his head falls off. This is obviously all his fault. The violent pro-government protesters are obviously Mubarak goons. Al Jazeera is showing people holding police IDs they removed from pro mubarak protesters.

11. Pulling Financial aid is one thing. Invasion? No way.
I would not expect the UN to do anything either.

Lesson: Do not start a revolution expecting someone to come and bail you out. Foreign govts always support the status quo.

14. He just needs to explicitly demand Mubarak leave NOW
Edited on Wed Feb-02-11 10:49 AM by Bragi
If he said that he backs the demands of the protesters that Mubarak leave now, then the protesters will have won, Mubarak would know his time is up, and be gone within 24 hours.

18. Obama has walked a tight rope. He cannot demand Mubarak
leave. Egypt is a sovereign nation. Obama would
look like a fool to do such a thing and Murbarak
puts more people out to put down the protesters.
We have no power over Egypt. The Army knows the
Foreign Aid is on the table. So does Mubarak.

21. Uh...he already did.
Latest statement from Obama was that there needs to be an orderly transition to a new government starting now.

It's been 24 hours and Mubarak's still there.

17. People always want contradictory things from us. Stay out of it but fix it. I don't blame
Edited on Wed Feb-02-11 10:51 AM by Pirate Smile
the protesters at all for that sentiment but there is this continual tension in almost everything between wanting the U.S. to fix things and wanting the U.S. to back the hell off and play no part in what is going on in other countries.

edit to add - it is also true within the U.S.

19. This is the "B" side of revolution
The first blush of heady optimism & chanting & marching & protesting is invigorating & hopeful, but once the government in charge gets its footing, they WILL stomp it out.

Staying in power is the goal..and anything will be used as a tactic to accomplish this.

All despots have their version of "secret police/hired thugs/etc", and once "the people" have revealed themselves, the thugs are set loose on them to crush the rebellion.

Our own revolution proved that words, banners, boycotts did not do it.

Blood is almost always spilled when despots are unseated...

We cannot be dragged into another war in the middle east.

Anything assistance we provide should be through the United Nations.

PERIOD.
