4. Yep - from her wiki entry:
In April 2003, in a speech at Kansas State University, Banfield raised concerns regarding media coverage of the conflict in Iraq. She also spoke against "cable news operators who wrap themselves in the American flag and go after a certain target demographic", and specifically named Fox News Channel as an example.<3> The New York Times reported that her speech angered NBC management, who rebuked her and lowered her profile.<2>

"I was office-less for ten months ... No phone, no computer. For ten months I had to report to work every day and ask where I could sit. If somebody was away I could use their desk. Eventually, after ten months of this, I was given an office that was a tape closet. They cleared the tapes out and put a desk and a TV in there, and a computer and phone. It was pretty blatant. The message was crystal clear. Yet they wouldn't let me leave. I begged for seventeen months to be let out of my contract. If they had no use for me, let's just part ways amicably—no need for payouts, just a clean break. And wouldn't allow it. I don't know what his rationale was—perhaps he thought I would take what I felt was a very strong brand, and others felt was a very strong brand, to another network and make a success of it. Maybe that's why he chose to keep me in a warehouse. I will never forgive him for his cruelty and the manner in which he decided to dispose of me."

13. She just disappeared, I remember wondering what had happened to her.
She was their rising star to the point where they sent to Afghanistan as an embedded journalist. But when she got back she exposed the fact that what she was allowed to show of that 'squeaky clean' war, was not the reality at all. She didn't give that speech on TV airc so it was several years before anyone had a clue as to why she disappeared so completely.

They ruined her career. Hersch is right imho. The country has been hi-jacked.

18. I believe she took time off, had a baby, then Court TV

Banfield joined CourtTV (renamed TruTV) in 2005. She was the co-host of the trial coverage show Banfield & Ford: Courtside weekdays from 1 to 3PM ET with Jack Ford. She is the only non-lawyer among Court TV's anchors. She signed on to host celebrity gossip show "Hollywood Heat" in January 2007.

On June 1, 2009, Banfield took over as host of the truTV series Open Court weekdays from 9 to 11AM ET, formerly hosted by Lisa Bloom.

No pity-party here. She had a salary and time to do anything she wanted to. Lots of people would have loved that position.

Why don't you opt out and come live the US civilian life for a bit with the rest of us. Got a job offer that is waiting for you. HeHe.

33. 'tis okay.
I known you folks have the toughest jobs. Absolutely no sarcasm here either.

When one needs the money, one needs the money. I've had to work jobs that were so bad, I would rather have spent the time in a dentist chair. My point was that, outside the military where you almost have signed away all your rights, I think employers should be fair minded and not hateful.

Peace.

26. Except she couldn't. They would not release her from her contract.
Edited on Sat Jan-22-11 09:07 PM by sabrina 1
They silenced her because she told the truth about the war.

And for some people, believe it or not, money isn't everything.

She could not do anything she wanted to do. She has made that clear.

She wanted to tell the public the truth about the War.

'Lots of people would have loved that position'!

I'm sure they would. There is no shortage of unprincipled people in this world.

But no real journalist or person of integrity would have 'loved that position'.

She wanted out of the contract. They refused.

I hope that explains it for you. She was, unbelievably, a person of honor who had the crazy notion that a journalist's job is to report facts to the public. If she was a dyed-blond bimbo on CNN willing to read the State sponsored propaganda, she would have been just fine.

30. Could she not get a lawyer and work it through the legal system?
If the company was in breach of contract, and it sounds like they were, it should have been fairly simple, even if not easy.

And maybe she did just that, I admit I know only what has been mentioned here about it.

32. I don't know whether she tried to legally challenge them.
But as long as they were paying her, they could probably have claimed they did not breach the contract. It probably depends on what her job was described as. When she signed the contract, I doubt she ever foresaw the possibility of being silenced. The atmosphere back then was pretty bad for someone who might claim the right to tell the truth about the war. Sean Penn eg, lost a multi million dollar contract because of his own activism against the war. He DID fight and won airc. But in his case, they were refusing to pay him.

16. Taking over? Try already done.
The United States is headed for that abyss. By its 250th birthday (2026) it will look more like Brazil circa 1985, South Africa circa 1990 or Russia circa 1993.

And all of us should hope that their mess stays at home, and that this America doesn't decide to try and fix its problems on the backs of other countries. If that happens, we're all in trouble. And I do mean all of us.

23. Mr. Rather was basically let go...
for failure to do his job properly, i.e. investigate. He became too caught up in ratings-instead-of-truth. Ironically, the entire industry shortly followed suit.

One need only look at the recent Tucson incident to see proof of this, where several national media outlets, both liberal and conservative (for relative values of the words, as applied to media... blech), were reporting the death of Congreswoman Giffords practically before she was in surgery.

Meanwhile, the local stations were wondering WTF was wrong with the nationals....

That story itself deserves a thourough follow-up, but good luck getting an unbiased critical self-exam from the press.

25. Rather was punked
That TANG secretary said that she remembered that document. It was entirely consistent with the situation at the TANG.

The forged one that was handed to Rather's producer had those little "type mistakes" that were "miraculously discovered" less than a few hours after they were released to the public.

Take some TRUE data and put it into an obviously falsified form. Then Voilà! An entirely false document in the public's mind.

It was a stroke of genius.

36. Many common people have been silenced and intimidated
systematically.

The media is not liberal nor does the media tend toward full or not-propaganda news.

Common people that want to be comfortable and happy with family and friends are silenced or deliberately brain-damaged by propaganda and fear. "Liberal" has no political weight, even if pragmatically, economically, and scientifically and morally viable, in the mot national and global media. Confusing to me.
