Posting here today is comforting.
Reminds me of the old days.
I've been here since the very early days.
When the Supremos STOPPED the recount in Florida, I KNEW something was BAD wrong,
and started looking for others who also KNEW something was WRONG.

I found DU on a link from BuzzFlash to the Top Ten Conservative Idiots.
...probably in Jan. or Feb. of 2001.

At that time, there WAS a private "Underground" forum that required a "secret password" to enter.
I was certain that THAT was where the insurgency was being planned,
and I pestered the admins to Let Me In...I'm READY!
I was somewhat disappointed that they weren't handing out AK-47s and establishing an Underground with secret bases and secret codes.
I stayed anyway,
and have logged on on a continuous daily basis through the years.
I don't believe that I have ever missed two days in a row,
and single days without at least checking Latest Breaking News are very rare.

For that, I received a many benefits:

*Through the DU Minnesota Forum,
I met, and enjoyed the companionship of several REAL People.
We shared meals together,
gathered in Common Cause protest,
and cared for one another.

..........DU Minnesota Group circa 2004. All of the above consented to have their photo posted on DU

Joining together in Common Cause with REAL People that you can see, smell, and touch
is much more fulfilling and rewarding than staring into a cold monitor. We laughed together, ate together, played together, and shared our Fears & Concerns for our Country and Our Party together.
I always left our Communal Activities feeling re-invigorated, validated, and cared for.
Thank You, DU.

The DU Photography Group taught me HOW to take a decent photograph,
and I have had photos published in National Magazines since then.

Thank You, DU.

The Gardening Forum & Rural/Farm Forum provided additional motivation
for my wife & I to move to The Woods and start Growing Our Own.

Thank You, DU.

The BIG Forums were an education in Behind the Scenes Politics.
I also began to fully appreciate how FAR the Democratic Party has lurched to The RIGHT.
For that awakening, I thank You, DU.

This will probably be the last time I am able to post the following here:
"In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed.

Among these are:

*The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;

*The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

*The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

*The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

*The right of every family to a decent home;

*The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

*The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

*The right to a good education.

All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.

America's own rightful place in the world depends in large part upon how fully these and similar rights have been carried into practice for all our citizens.

For unless there is security here at home there cannot be lasting peace in the world."--FDR, 1944

The above Traditional Democratic Party Values are WHY I joined the Party so long ago.
I haven't changed,
and regardless of WHAT happens to DU or what remains of the Party of FDR and Working Class Americans,
I will continue to fight FOR the above values wherever I am.
Thank You DU,
for helping me to solidify and refine my STAND for these values.

There is another New & Improved DU in another place,
but THIS DU, where I have lived for over 10 years, will soon die.
It is impossible for me not to grieve this death.
It is comforting to post here today,
and grieve its passing unmolested.
Today reminds me of the Old DU.

Good Bye, to all my old friends,
and this old familiar place.
:hi:

I heard they are giving away Jet Skis and FREE candy for the children at the New & Improved place.
I will go check it out.
If I like it, I will stick around.

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.
Solidarity99!

10. This is a beautiful post. I always love to see your comments
in a thread, bvar. They always cut through the bs and remind us of why we too chose the Dem Party rather than the other one.

I hope to see you somewhere, this is what I meant by feeling sad about the demise of DU2. It seems that people are going in different directions. For me, I will probably be spending more on OWS over the next year. This is the movement we all used to wish for. So, I want to support it now, unlike all the other times when so many were ready to act, we were 'encouraged' to 'not rock the boat'. Well, we tried that, and imho, this boat badly needs rocking and I just hope it's not too late.

I am *with* you about the comforting aspect of today. This place feels like it did before it morphed. There's a sense of Community again, even as we wait to be evicted. Thanks for your post, even if your garden pics have made me insanely jealous!

Best Wishes,

14. It HAS been an incredibly valuable education, thanks to the massive group of bright people.
I actually joined a year earlier than my profile says. But I was banned for no apparent reason. I honestly believe it was using all caps in a subject line. They were strange in the early days.

It's a great great forum. And I've always been quite jealous of your gardening ability.

27. K&R. What a wonderful tribute...
I found DU and joined during the lead up to the Iraq war. Not only have I learned so much here, made so many friends among DUers, several of whom I have actually met, LOL, but DU has always been here for me through the bad times, "shock and awe," the heartbreaking 2004 election, and anytime I didn't feel like being alone. DU will always be my home, wherever it is... :toast:

but you will never find one parked in MY garage.

For some of us, its about Style, Class, The Feel, and The Ride,
not the latest Bells & Whistles.

I read a bit went back to Buzzflash, then I found an old since gone under, I think, website...hated.com, about GW, and it mentioned DU, so I came back, read more and signed up in the early days.

I truly hope to see you around somewhere....:hug:

38. Reminds me of Voltaire.
Your post and garden pictures and the DU situation mirror the ending of Candide.

Pangloss tells Candide that this is the best of all possible worlds. Candide sighs and simply says. "This may be true. But we must all tend our own garden."

What you write is true. And you have a well tended garden.
