Here's why I don't like the overlying concept of DU3
It focuses energy of the member on the processes of the board.

The board, with its juries and participations and the likely propensity to facilitate factions, eats time and attention. It has a sort of narcissism about it.

Is it possible for the reader who just wants a daily review of the most important news and opinions to access this in an efficient manner? That remains to be seen.

Many of us are not here PRIMARILY for *community* or even for argument or discussion, but rather to inform ourselves and then go advocate for policy or candidates or other responsibilities of an informed citizenry.

1. In An Attempt To Diversify
It seems one will be left doing a lot more searching, as topics are not, seemingly, readily available. We will still have the latest but where, and perhaps this is me not understanding the setup, where does one look for a continuing discussion of a thread that one has replied to. The beauty of DU as it is, is the simplicity of use and DU3 seems much more involved and complicated.

12. You want the 'My Posts' tab at the top of nearly every screen
Here's the URL: http://www.democraticunderground.com/du3/?com=myposts

(for "where does one look for a continuing discussion of a thread that one has replied to").

2. Very much so. It's a board for busybodies and policers, not a discussion board. Even if one is there
primarily for community, most of the community features seem to concern themselves with ways to block, ignore, jurify or judge other posters, or to figure out who is blocking and ignoring you, or what dumbass thing someone said before they rethought themselves. It's a very different feel.

3. It seems to me that the overlying concept is to sell more ads
The prime space on screen is devoted to ads, where I'd prefer it were devoted to content.

4. Really? It took me all of 3 seconds to find LBN
and start reading the news. It is a very different layout.

5. You got my vote.
I'm with you, it's like going from a flourishing tropical garden, bursting and bulging with information,
to the surface of the moon. Or at least a landscape as bleak and spare as a frozen polar ice cap.

There are a few scattered shoots and leaflets poking their heads through the snow, giving you a
smattering of "news of the day," but it's no comparison.

I think all the extra white space has to do with making the site attractive to mobile phone users.

On another thread, I said:

"There really should be two versions, a slimmed-down mobile app interface,
along with a full-screen option for the rest of us.

I don't see why a minority of high-rent, latest-Droid or iPhone hipsters
should dictate the look and feel of DU. Unless their votes count more,
because that demographic is more attractive to advertisers, or something
like that.

My first impression was really bad. I got out right away. But a second
look suggests that's what's going on."

9. I think the juries and participations are the result of
endless complaining about the moderation here. It looks to me like the owners just threw up their hands and are going to let DU self moderate. I'm not sure they're going to get the outcome they desire, but it's not my call to make.

10. I think it may be easier to find that kind of information on DU3
I'm not sure why it would be more difficult. LBN is still a main forum, and the "Good Reads" forum may provide another good resource. Also, you can more easily see the latest posts for specific subforums that you subscribe to, so if one participates in smaller forums and groups based on access to news and opinions about a specific causes then they can get the latest news for all those forums/groups in a single place.
