If the church which refused to accept interracial couples as members
Edited on Sun Dec-04-11 08:17 PM by dsc
ran a soup kitchen, got federal tax money for running said soup kitchen, and then lobbied to be exempt from laws requiring them to hire and serve interracial couples in the programs on which the tax money were spent, would you chastise those who protested that behavior by giving fake dollars similiar to those gays give the Salvation Army?

If so, Ok then you are consistent.

If not, why not?

1. Not only do they get money to run soup kitchens, but many municipalities require
parolees to access their faith-based treatment for alcoholism or drug addiction as a condition of parole.

2. Hmmm that brings up an interesting question:
"would you chastise those who protested that behavior by giving fake dollars similiar to those gays give the Salvation Army"

Would you kill one person to save five others?

Would you deny aid to a group that sucks ass on some things even though they were helping/saving others?

If so, is there another group out there doing the same thing on the same scale that you recommend?

3. Goodwill comes to mind. Not run by bigots.
An organization does not have to be huge to be effective locally. There are plenty of other options.

4. I get that, but how many of them are out there that folks see?
I don't see 'atheists for helping the homeless' at the local store. I do see the salvation army though.

For several years when I worked at chase me and my engineers raised money for an adopt a family program, ran by a local catholic charity (and I am no where near being a catholic).

Not saying I love the SA - though they did help me once and I volunteered with them up in a small town here in Ohio (Mt. Vernon). We were helping out troubled kids who had no where to go after school. No other group was out there doing that.

I suppose I could have told them 'I don't agree with all you do, so screw you and those that need help' but I just didn't have the heart.

No one else was coming forward and helping them out, or any other folks there for that matter.

Yes I would. There are millions of charities out there. Why should I give to one that hurts people when I can give to one that doesn't? Why do religious charities get a pass on all the harm they cause because they engage in some selective good deeds? Human rights are disposable because the Salvation Army does some nice things for needy people? I don't think so.

7. They need to do DNA tests on all members. And toss out the mud-bloods.

8. Damn straight I would
I refuse to give a penny of my money to any organization that supports bigotry. Human rights are not negotiable, and no amount of charity is enough to make me ignore violations of those rights. It makes me sick that so many people are willing to support charities that promote bigotry toward others.

9. Correction
I wouldn't chastise people who put in 'protest dollars' to denounce any form of bigotry. Aside from that the rest stands.
