It was bad then and I imagine worse now. One family she visited lived in a two-room shack with about a 2' drop into the first room from the doorway (no door). The mother wasn't articulate in even the most basic definition of the skill. As my wife was going in, pigs were coming out. The children apparently all slept on a pile of clothes in the middle of the room and the mother had a mattress on the floor in the other room.
I accompanied her to another house, a bit larger. It had a single light bulb hanging by its wires from the ceiling and they had a small B&W TV (like 5" diagonal) with extension cords strung around on nails to plug it in. We were there to deliver toys that one of my professors had given me to take to them. The family was at a small table snapping beans and they wanted to give us about half of the beans they had prepared. The generosity was striking. My wife didn't make much, but she was far better off than they were and THEY wanted to give HER food. That was a real eye-opener.
I doubt those families will be impacted one way or the other with the HCR situation. They're mostly out of the loop. If anyone should be sought after for assistance, that's a good place to start. The GOP knows they won't vote.
