http://www.kmbc.com/news/26520652/detail.html

How many schools used today as a snow makeup day?

1. I heard of one on the radio where the NAACP was raising hell over
I thought it was local here in the Cleveland area but cannot find any links on it.

2. Why exactly are people raising a stink over it?
Because I remember, clearly, when I was in high school, I thought about what the meaning of those holidays I had off.

4. Did you graduate before MLK Day became a federal holiday?
Or did you go to school in Arizona?

6. Not sure what you're getting at with this
I graduated in 2007.

I'm just saying, you ask the average high school student if they're thinking about the meaning of the holiday that they're not at school on, and you'll probably get an overwhelming no.

3. They probably have a lawsuit on their hands for only allowing black students excused absences.
Edited on Mon Jan-17-11 09:34 PM by Selatius
It's discriminatory against white students. The fairer solution should have been to give excused absences to any family wishing to have their children at home regardless of race or color.

5. Would anyone (besides the kids) have cared if they used Presidents Day as a snow makeup day?
All the colleges around here have class that day while the k-12 schools are usually off?

7. I've always thought that, instead of schools being closed on MLK Day,
they should set the day aside for learning about the him and the Civil Rights movement. It would be a better way to honor Dr. King's memory.

8. What about government employees?
Do you think they should have the day off? A lot would probably rather have another vacation day instead

9. Well, schools are learning institutions
If we're not taking a day to have our learning institutions teach our children something about our history, aren't we doing something wrong?
