This from someone who visited many years ago.

7. Wow.
She was runover twice, really 3 times.

The truck ran over her with his front wheels, stopped and then ran over her with his back wheels.

A second truck ran over her foot.

No one gave a damn that a injured child was laying in the road.

45. Hate to say it, but it's not that unusual
Edited on Sun Oct-16-11 04:55 PM by Xithras
Hardly a week goes by when LiveLeak doesn't have a new video with something like this from China. It's certainly not universal, but it's WAY too common. I've known enough Chinese to know that there isn't a disrespect for life there, so that's certainly not the cause. I don't buy the claim for a minute that life "has less value". I think it has more to do with not wanting to get involved.

There was a video posted a few months ago showing a young man and woman who lost control of a scooter and hit a concrete median. Their bodies laid there for nearly 30 minutes before someone stopped to help. The young man never moved, but the woman was writhing around for at least 20 minutes before she either died or lost consciousness. It was a horrific thing to watch, and dozens of vehicles passed them before one stopped to help.

Of course, I hate to say this, but watching vids on LiveLeak also wakes you up to one other fact. It's not just a China thing...in a LOT of the world, most drivers simply steer around an accident (the Russian's are fairly famous for this too). The practice of stopping to help at an accident site is fairly uncommon around most of the world. China is simply notable for the sheer volume of these videos (which may simply be a combination of their massive population and the ubiquity of video cameras there).

29. look at this
the below is from a previous incident, the same article talks of a guy who hit a woman with ihs bike and then just stabbed her to death, and a guy who hit and just decided to run over and kill a begger because he didn't think her life was worth anything. in all of these cases it's a female that is the victim.

<The killing in Fuzhou occurred as numerous witnesses watched in shock. The unnamed driver, seeing he had hit the six-year-old girl, returned to his car and hit her again.

"He drove back, and ran the right front wheel over the girl again," the local Strait Metropolitan Daily quoted witness Chen Yi as saying.>

27. I wonder if police corruption has anything to do with this
I've heard that in some places in China, police just want to close a case and claim they caught the criminal. I just wonder if people ignored her because they were afraid of getting involved and being arrested. I don't believe that so many people could walk by and do nothing if they weren't afraid.

28. why was she hit in the first place
the car was stopped for a while . i thought the car that hit her was going to suddenly come from the opposite direction. but from where the car that hit her stood it seemed like the driver should have been able to see her even while itw as still stopped.

i don't know. maybe they are afraid. but i just can't see mostp eople even if that was the case to react in a way when it's a small child like this.

and as i said above, what if it was a boy ? i wonder if they would have reacted the same.

44. i don't understand that at all
some seem to have some mentality that either we can't criticize what goes on anywhere else unless we are perfect. or they just don't consider it important or sensationalism type story.

but this is a big problem in chian. and in fact many who are criticizing htis ARE Chinese people.

this is not on the same level at all but remember during the olympics how they got another girl to appear in public and sing some song, but the actual girl whose voice was used was not shown because they didn't consider her nice enough to put out there. as if the girls are just objects.

this is just so fucked up. most people don't even run over when it's a dog, cat, bird etc. but how this girl was just treated like some useless object.

55. Driver of the first van worries he'll have to pay more if girl is injured than he would if she died
Edited on Mon Oct-17-11 02:29 AM by FedUpWithIt All
He tells the media in a telephone call...""If she is dead, I may pay only about 20,000 yuan ($3,125). But if she is injured, it may cost me hundreds of thousands yuan,"

This man STOPPED and then decided to run over the child with his rear tires.

When she ran from shop to shop for the identity of the girl, the rag collector was told by a number of shopkeepers to mind her own business.

http://english.sina.com/china/p/2011/1016/405462.html

The police have reportedly arrested the second driver and, according to the girl's father, the first driver has also been arrested. The first driver even called Yueyue's father, saying that he was willing only to pay some compensation but not to turn himself in.

"If it was you who hit someone, you'd run too," the driver reportedly told Yangcheng Evening News, blaming the child for the accident. "You can see the little girl, looking around when she walked. If she walked properly, how could I hit her?"

The father said Yueyue ran into the alley to look for her seven-year-old brother.

His wife ran out looking for her, but in a different direction.
WTF is wrong with people. Seriously just :puke:

65. I seriously hope not.
Sadly, this man's comments and views on this are apparently not that rare. More than a few of comments on some of the Chinese reports are both callous and share the sentiment of this man. Apparently there is fear of liability in accident cases, among some, and that death, in such cases, is preferred because compensation is less.

53. After reading some of the comments
it appears as though strangers are reluctant to help because they may get in trouble for getting involved. People mention a court case in which a bystander helped an injured person who later took him to court, and he was held responsible.

Which makes sense. I can't imagine any society which would be so callous to a small child, without some explanation like that.
