New Polls Find All-Time Lows For Obama, Congress
New Polls Find All-Time Lows For Obama, Congress

WASHINGTON -- Two new polls released on Tuesday confirm that the summer's debt ceiling debate along with the drumbeat of bad economic news have taken a toll, yielding all-time low ratings of both President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress and suggesting real peril for Obama in 2012. Obama's ratings are now lower than those for Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton at the same time in their presidencies.

The latest survey from the Washington Post and ABC News finds approval of Obama has fallen to 43 percent, while for the first time a majority (53 percent) disapproves. The results from the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds nearly identical results -- 44 percent approve and 51 percent disapprove. The low ratings confirm downward trends seen in most other public polls over the summer.

As the Washington Post notes, Obama's ratings are now worse than those of Reagan and Clinton at the same time in their first terms. Both won re-election despite "serious midterm setbacks" in their first terms, but by this stage both "had settled safely above the 50 percent mark" and "stayed in positive territory" throughout their re-election campaigns.

The two surveys also show plunging confidence in Congress. The NBC/Journal poll finds approval of Congress falling to 13 percent, just one point shy of the all-time low measured by that survey in October 2008. The ABC/Post survey shows approval of Republicans in Congress dropping from 34 to 28 percent since April, nearly matching the all-time low of 25 percent in July 2008...

1. Here is how you will know that the corporations have finally won.
They will stop asking us poll questions. By then what we think won't matter.

2. Or they get really bold
and stop the charade of actually holding elections. But I doubt they will because elections are very good theatre and reassuring to the sheeple that they actually have a say in our democracy.

6. The problem is the guy or gal we elect lied to us during the campaign
and we fall for it every time.

7. I don't think I've ever seen a gulf between 'campaign' and 'reality' as large as the one Obama has.

Politicians always turn out to be less than they promise during the campaign, but I've never seen a politician make as many 180 degree spins as Obama has. He promoted himself as something completely opposite what he is, and that's pissed a lot of people off.

8. It's pissed me off. I have no respect for someone who lies to me to my face and that's what I feel
he does with everyone of his speeches. Unless it is with executive order, Obama can do nothing to create jobs. Only Congress can spend money and the right will not let a jobs bill pass the House. Yet I'm sure he will tell us how he with a bipartisan Congress will put America back to work.

The whole group of politicians in Washington are lying to us about jobs except for a few who tell it like it is. Berny Sanders is one who tells it like it is.

When he comes to your town, the merchandise sells out in 5 minutes, the place is packed with hopeful people. What you see here is the nature of pretty boring polls. Don't be discouraged.

Steve Kerrigan, CEO DNC Committee essentially just said the above on Martin Bashir. Watch it later on their site:

4. He needs 100% Dem approval, but our side doesn't get polls.
Any Dem who would tell a pollster they disapprove of Obama should be given some Play-Doh and told to go sit quietly with the kids who who can't be trusted with finger paint. Republicans have the the brains to tell pollsters they think Obama is a Muslim when they really don't. Dems haven't figured out that they need to tell pollsters they approve of Obama whether they do or not.

It's really simple. If you are part of the team, you help make the sale. You don't undermine the team's product, even if you aren't happy with it. Tell your opinion to your Grandma or your therapist, but have the brains not to tell it to a pollster.
