Greenville coyote problem: 'It's here and it's here to stay'

It was enough to cause strained jokes and some overt hand-wringing among city politicians: Packs of coyotes and large snakes — maybe poisonous ones, who knows? — populating the city.

(Here's the link, but you gotta pay to read more)

Who knows? Next thing you know, we'll have saguaros too.

1. Lots of coyotes and snakes here. Lots of javelina too
There's a BLM pond next to my property and all manner of animals visit for the water. Ducks, egrets even the occasional Great Blue Heron. No saguaros though, we're too high at 4650 feet.

10. Are you in the Southwest?
They are only found in the southwestern area of North America and throughout Central and South America.

12. Southern Az
No saguaros here but lots of trees. I live close to where to Monument Fire was, in fact I was evacuated.
The only place saguaros exist in the US is in So Az, the Sonoran Desert. Lots in Mexico though.

2. There is no such thing as a coyote probem
We humans have encroached on nature enough!

9. Right. It's a human problem.

Seriously I hate to think about displaced wildlife.

Every year, Georgia resembles Northern Florida more and more. Not just the heat, but the wildlife.

8. Yes, I know. I live in the Atlanta area,
and all summer, there have been many bear sightings in residential neighborhoods.

14. That's true. Now certain palm trees stay alive and thrive in ATL
No palms used to be able to live through ATL winters when I was a kid. 40 years later, the climate has changed, winters are less severe.

5. Eastern coyotes are a distinct subspecies of coyote and are native to this area.
We don't get the desert ones here. Ours look more like red wolves but smaller. They are making a resounding population comeback in NC, too. We hear them "laughing" all the time just after sunset.

6. Coyote killed a Great Blue Heron at pond near my home.
I live near the very small 'Blue Heron' nature preserve in north ATL. Last year we found a dead blue heron, freshly killed by a coyote. The fang wounds were obvious.

ATL has lots of coyotes. I don't recall ever having heard of them around here when i was a kid. Where did all the coyotes in urban areas come from?

7. Coyotes do quite well in urban areas.
Edited on Tue Aug-30-11 02:08 PM by izquierdista
I once saw one crossing Ventura Blvd. in the San Fernando Valley. It was about 3 in the morning though. Humans keep all those tasty cans of food next to the house, and they even have a neighborhood buffet at the curb once a week. If that's not enough, there's an occasional dachsund or kitty cat for dessert. If you really want to get rid of coyotes, you just need to put out the latest anvil catalog from the ACME mail order company.
