I don't intrude on other people's holidays. My family wasn't here in 1776
so Independence day is not my holiday, same with some of the other holidays including the next one. I am not in a labor union, I support there being the holiday for labor. I still don't understand why it's in September instead of May. This holiday is not mine, for me it's easy, I will just go to work. I know some of you can't just go to work, but if are not in a labor union, hopefully you can find a way to work on this day.

Not taking something that doesn't belong to you is the first and easiest way to show respect to the people it does belong to.

9. So...WTF is with YOU...??
You ask not to "intrude on other peole's holidays" and then TRASH others who might be citizens longer than you?

Are you smoking something? You think there aren't people here on DU who might be OFFENDED by this?

I applaud you as a "New Immigrant" who doesn't know the history of this Country and are really asking what it's all about...but there is something "kind of insincere" about your post. It's as if you are trashing fellow DU'ers who have been here on DU for years and trying to "broad brush us" as some kind of "Colonial Imperialist Cabal" who is "out to get you."

I think you might want to consider "taking a break" and cutting loose in other avenues of your life before you come back with this kind of "ClapTrap" which is only divisive and not productive to dialogue here.

37. um.... thats some definition of an arbitrary term you got there, are you suggesting
Edited on Mon Aug-22-11 07:22 PM by fishbulb703
we equate out holidays with say, theistic holidays in a country that follows religious prescriptions? A country that REQUIRES people to recognize a date (or span of dates) of significance?

In that case, no we probably don't have any (but an argument could be made for Sundays, everyone is required to obey the fact no official business can be recorded on Sunday), but yeah, your definition is incredibly nitpicky and inane.

41. Are you trying to say that "Average American" who celebrates "Public Holidays" is Trash to You?
I certainly hope I read your post wrong. I cannot imagine someone would come here on DU and trash their fellow DU'ers who might have a background different from yours.

When I joined DU back in late 2001...I found it a place that welcomed folks of all gender, color, background and experience.

We did WAR THROUGH many years...but your post seems somewhat shallow and ignoring of DU History and the people who have been in the TRENCHES here since "STOLEN ELECTION 2000!"

I might be misreading your words or intent of your words...but you did push a "HOT BUTTON" in my psyche with your Clap Trap...(as I took the read of your post).

Hopefully you will respond with an explanation that will ease the wounds of those you sent shafts to and we can have a "reasonable discussion" after your odd post.

Peace to You...Buddy!

102. Wrong. The US does have public holidays
Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) establishes the following public holidays for Federal employees. Please note that most Federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule. For these employees, when a holiday falls on a nonworkday -- Saturday or Sunday -- the holiday usually is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday).
Friday, December 31, 2010* New Year’s Day
Monday, January 17 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 21** Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 30 Memorial Day
Monday, July 4 Independence Day
Monday, September 5 Labor Day
Monday, October 10 Columbus Day
Friday, November 11 Veterans Day
Thursday, November 24 Thanksgiving Day
Monday, December 26*** Christmas Day
http://www.opm.gov/Operating_Status_Schedules/fedhol/2011.asp

For 2012, go to http://www.opm.gov/operating_status_schedules/fedhol/2012.asp

Now if you mean we don't have public holidays on which all employees, public and private are given days off, you have a point. This workaholic country does not believe in giving workers time off for just any frivolous reason. That's why so many people work while sick, for instance. :sarcasm:

Some of my ancestors on my dad's side were already here in 1776, but my mom's ancestors were still hanging around some fjord in Norway. Does that mean I can celebrate Independence Day for only half of the day, but also celebrate Syttende Mai for another half day? That would be OK because my mom's family were still in Norway in 1815 for the first Nasjonaldagen, so that can be half my holiday. Should I celebrate Nasjonaldagen until noon on May 17, and Independence Day after noon on July 4? That way I can get in on the fireworks.

Edited on Mon Aug-22-11 07:24 PM by fishbulb703
If you are not able to appreciate the spirit behind a holiday, especially one that has cultural significance in your country, you must really hate your culture. For example, I am an atheist and could easily decry Christmas as a materialistic binging on consumerism, and a hollow, pointless marker of a false god of a religion that has wrought so much harm on humanity.

Instead I enjoy the time to be with family and friends and use it as an opportunity to pause and reflect on how lucky I am just to be alive, let alone be blessed by fate or luck or the universe to have such great friends and family that support and love me.

Plus, what an excuse to get hammered and have a raucous game of spades or euchre or rummy!

36. While I can kind-of understand where you come from, these holidays are a good
reason for families to get together and have things like cook-outs and parties and all that shit..

I recognize these holidays for being that, but I wouldn't hold it against you for not celebrating them, myself.

42. When they make a holiday they only make so much holiday mana per year, so...
I can see the point about using up excess holiday mana if it is not your holiday.
If everyone in the US tried to celebrate Independence Day, for instance, some people would not be able to celebrate it,
because all of the mana would be used up.
There might even be some people with family from 1776 who would not be able to celebrate the holiday, because someone took it.

Therefore I applaud this!

PEOPLE leave enough holiday for others to enjoy!!
you wouldn't eat a piece of birthday cake if it wasn't your birthday would you???

were here and fought in the Revolutionary War. They are holidays that I celebrate and have no problem with other Americans celebrating these holidays.

Because it makes a lot of sense.

My great-grandfather told me that some people would never understand how our family lived through the tough times like they did.
But, we're still here, still going strong.

65. I intrude on everyone's holidays.
Christmas, Easter, Memorial Day, Other People's Birthdays, Hanukkah, St. Patrick's Day. Sometimes I do it for the food. Sometimes I do it for the company. Sometimes I do it for the presents. Sometimes I do it because I really believe in whatever is being celebrated. And sometimes I do it out of respect for or in celebration of whatever the holiday was created to commemorate, celebrate, honor and share.

91. At my kid's birthday I made him eat all his cake. Other's tried but I forbid it since it wasn't ...
their holiday. It took him a while, with a little crying and some stomach ache but he finished his chocolate cake.
I don't believe in waste. Your cake, you eat it.
Others were upset but I explained to them that the celebration was not theirs but the kid's and they couldn't have something that did not belong to them.

They must have agreed with me, since none have returned after this birthday, my kid's first.

100. If you "take away" part of my July 4 holiday from me by celebrating it
even though you aren't entitled to because your ancestors weren't here in 1776 - what, exactly, did you take from me? Time? That's all a holiday is - a segment of time. Do I get some fraction of a second less to watch fireworks because you took that away? Doesn't everybody get the same amount of time on the same day?
