Police Say They Visited Tucson Suspect’s Home Even Before Rampage
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/12/us/12loughner.html?_r=1&hp

The police were sent to the home where Jared L. Loughner lived with his family on more than one occasion before the attack here on Saturday that left a congresswoman fighting for her life and six others dead, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said on Tuesday.

A spokesman, Jason Ogan, said the details of the calls were being reviewed by legal counsel and would be released as soon as the review was complete. He said he did not know what the calls were about — they could possibly have been minor, even trivial matters — or whether they involved Jared Loughner or another member of the household.

A friend of Mr. Loughner’s also said in an interview on Tuesday that Mr. Loughner, 22, was skilled with a gun — as early as high school — and had talked about a philosophy of fostering chaos.

The news of police involvement with the Loughners suggests that county sheriff’s deputies were at least familiar with the family, even if the reason for their visits was unclear as of Tuesday night.

1. The college sent a letter of his supsension to his home.
Edited on Tue Jan-11-11 10:59 PM by LisaL
It was delivered by police.
"Working with legal counsel, College administration issued a letter of immediate suspension on September 29,2010. That evening, two police officers delivered the letter of suspension to the student at his and his parent’s residence and spoke with the student and his parents."

whether or not his parents knew of him being suspended from school. Thanks.

7. The sherriff spoke truth.
And I doubt his office is in charge of firearm sales.

9. The county sheriff's office is where we go in NY
to apply for a permit. It could be the same in AZ. Although in NY it is very expensive, the application extensive , and it takes a couple months to be processed. My husband had to provide 4 or 5 personal references which are checked by written evals and the application could not go forward without the written forms returned in the mail to the sheriffs office. It is then reviewed by a judge who reads over everything, looks at a background check (part of the fees pay for this) and then signs the permit.

12. NY has some of the stringent gun laws in the US
AZ is exactly on the other extreme... why AZ gun shows are a FAVORITE of the cartels, as well as AZ gun shops

16. Yeah, if you even sugest
bringing a gun to SUNY NY... they will tar and feather you. They are considering this in AZ at this point.

This is how much two different worlds this is.

22. Why would anyone bring a gun to a SUNY school
unless participating in competitive bullseye? It is very difficult, almost impossible to get a concealed carry in our county. My dh keeps his pistols locked up in a safe when he is not using them in his league or practice. Even I don't know where he keeps the key. He might have it with him out of state.

I don't have a permit. He took me once to shoot at the range and I don't know if it is the heaviness of the guns... I just am not into it although he thinks I should take a safety course and learn to be competent with one. Maybe after we leave NY. I feel pretty safe here-- even though the local city has a good amount of gun violence. I think it is gang/drug related with the occasional innocent bystander victim (people unlucky enough, too poor to move out of the combat zone), this year a toddler was shot in the head.

14. Sheriff Dupnik calls them dysfunctional
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said Monday that he couldn't comment specifically on Loughner's upbringing or mental health, but he noted that his was a "somewhat dysfunctional family."

-----

And this from a former friend:

Osler, who spent a lot of time at the Loughner's home during high school, described the family's home as "cold, dark and unpleasant" and added that he always felt "unwelcomed."

Littered with musical instruments and a computer in the middle of the room, Osler said he never observed a particularly loving relationship between the Loughners. Loughner once told Osler that he loved his pet dog Hannah more than his parents.

"They did very few family activities together besides going to car races and one family vacation to the beach, and they never decorated their house for the holidays," recalled Osler. "Jared's parents were religious but Jared proclaimed himself as an atheist."

A breakdown of the reports:

Dec. 21, 1996: Loughner's mother reported that her registration tag was stolen from her vehicle.

Oct. 11, 2002: Loughner's father reported that his truck window had been smashed.

Sept. 23, 2004: Loughner complained that two students at Mountain View High School stuck him with a pen.

May 12, 2006: Staff at Mountain View High School called deputies to report Loughner was severely intoxicated on alcohol.
