3. We went on the Schell's brewery tour last month
in New Ulm. I didn't realize that it's the second oldest family owned brewery in the country.

5. I think only Yuengling has been around longer,
and that is a fine, brave little brew as well. :toast:

14. Yep, that is the oldest family-owned brewery in the country.
Schell's is second oldest. If you've never been to the Schell's brewery, it's worth the hour-long trip to New Ulm to see. Beautiful setting.

2. When it first came out, there was a 1 per customer limit because it sold out so quickly.

You have to love our cheap local brews.

On edit - it wasn't me. Who's going to post a Surly? :D

11. Yes, Surly is fantastic.
We've got some good brewing going on here in MN.

4. Grain Belt - yummm.
:9 Nothing, and I mean NOTHING tastes better on a hot, muggy day than a frosty cold Grain Belt Premium. The Nordeast is a little heavier but just as craveable.

7. I'm having a great time with the stickies
even though it started off bad with people making homophobic statements. Once that got weeded out, it has been fun as hell.

I would like for people to admit their stickies. I HAD to join in because it is hilarious.

8. I miss GrainBelt since I moved to WI
Living in northeast WI, there are only a few retailers that carry Premium. Usually it sits on the shelf too long and gets skunky (one of the drawbacks of clear glass bottles).

12. My brother lives in Green Bay and says he can get Nordeast there.
And Summit.

16. I'm about 35 miles south of Green Bay.
As I said, Premium is available but not always in prime shape. Summit Pale Ale is always available, but other Summit brews not so much. I've never seen Nordeast here, but drink when I go home to MN. I grew up near Nordeast -- I miss Maylslacks roast beef too.

20. If I had a better throwing arm, I could chuck rocks at Mayslack's parking lot
from my back yard.

I joke - it's actually about 4 blocks.

I did try the Nordeast - liked it.

What really impressed me - folks in Eau Claire, WI have reconstituted Walter's Beer

http://www.waltersbeereauclaire.com/

which disappeared years ago.

21. I remember Walters
They had little bottles that were 6 or 7 ounces. My brother called 'em "Little Wallys"

22. Walter's?!?!
Edited on Fri Aug-19-11 12:08 PM by hifiguy
Oh, that brings back some memories. My buddies and I would occasionally drive over to a liquor store by the river in St. Paul just because it was the only place we found where one could buy "Little Wallys" - case of 36 8 oz bottles of Walter's. A fine little brew it was...

23. Yep, it's back.
I heard that the recipe was lost and they brought in Walter's fans and brewed and rebrewed until they got it right.

I bought some and I thought it tasted like the Walter's I remember from the old days.

9. Nordeast is good stuff
I try to get it as often as I can. Of course I just go to Hudson and get some New Glarus to get the best of both worlds.

24. They only distriute in WI
so anyone in the Cities or Chicago has to jump the border. The trip from Minneapolis to Hudson is only around 30mi each way so it is not that far to go and stock up every couple weeks or so. You can also get it 7 days a week, no alcohol sales in MN on Sundays.
