PHOTO of the DAY (JAPAN) Dial up warning

Men in Japanese Imperial Army uniform parade at Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo on Monday. Thousands of people visited the shrine to pay their respects to the Japanese war dead, marking the 66th anniversary of the end of the World War II.

HI THERE! A bear(Kuma)greets visitors at the Noboribetsu Bear Park in southern Hokkaido. The park is one of the largest of its kind in Japan, featuring over one hundred bears, as well as the world’s only Brown Bear Museum showing the species’ origins, habitat, history and way of life.

Burning Memory: A Japanese flag is burned by South Korean protesters during a rally denouncing Japan and North Korea in Seoul on Monday. Thousands of Korean war veterans attended a rally to celebrate the Aug 15 Korean Liberation Day from Japanese colonial rule in 1945.

Bereaved families in the Miyagi Prefecture city of Kesennuma hold a bonfire honoring the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami on Aug. 16 on the former site of Jifukuji temple. The event marked the first Bon festival -- a Buddhist festival in which the spirits of the dead are said to visit their surviving families -- since the disaster. Jifukuji temple, though located on a hill, was wiped out by the March 11 tsunami; 70 of its parishioners died, and 81 are still missing. (Mainichi)

A flowering rice plant is seen in a paddy field in Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai, on Aug. 14, 2011. The rice has flowered despite salt in the soil from the area after it was flooded by the March 11 tsunami. Many farmers gave up on planting rice in the salty soil. The owner of the pictured field, Koichi Kimura, 53, planted about four weeks later than usual. Though still cautious about how they will turn out, he was pleased that the plants had come this far. People wearing masks and dressed in colorful outfits perform a traditional dance called Akazawa Yoroikenbai in front of disaster survivors living in temporary housing in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, on Aug. 15, 2011. The group that performed the dance usually performs by people's houses on request, but this year it performed at temporary housing communities to give emotional support to those living there. Emperor Akihito, right, delivers his remarks with Empress Michiko in front of a huge bank of chrysanthemums to offer prayers for the war dead at the Budokan in Tokyo on Monday, Aug. 15, 2011. Japan marked the 66th anniversary of its surrender in World War II on Monday with somber remembrances across the country and a memorial in Tokyo led by the Emperor. (AP Photo/Shizuo Kambayashi)

Lit lanterns float on the Natori River in Natori, Miyagi Prefecture, on Aug. 13, 2011. About 1,000 of the lanterns were floated on the river at the beginning of the Obon holiday, expressing people's thoughts and prayers for those who lost their lives in the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami. 19. I had so much fun.
For 3 nights, I danced until 2 in the morning and even banged on a huge taiko drum during that song.

Here are 2 more of the dances (songs) we danced to.

1. This song is called 播州段文音頭 and it is sung and danced in the Banshu region like Kobe and Himeji and Akashi.

2. This the classic bon odori song that is done over the whole country. It is called tanko bushi. 炭坑節

20. That second song I have heard before ..
At our Bon Odori at Japantown, for the Natsu Matsuri. Unfortunately, they don't hold them any longer. The Street fairs have become more popular, which is sad. A part of Nihon Machi culture slipping away with time, I guess.

Thanks for sharing those, I hope others enjoy them as well!

24. Natsukashii!
One of my fondest memories of Japan is visiting my old neighborhood during o-Bon and being asked to help carry the mikoshi through the neighborhood and participating in the dance at the school playground.
