I take it Pawlenty is done.
I hope Paul has finally broken through to the top tier.

1. Paul wins straw polls very often.
He's out before he starts.

3. The Paul cult is very devoted.
But not as widespread as they think.

4. Nah - he can use this to go back to his fundraisers
You are only talking about 17,000 of the base of the base of the base of the party.

Normally Ron Paul wins these kinds of events if that tells you anything.

16. Perry wasn't on the ballot.
But, he got more votes than Romney (who didn't go to Iowa to campaign) from write-ins.

I think that only two nominees won Iowa caucuses. So Iowa caucuses really don't mean diddly.

12. You're correct.

1979: G. H. W. Bush beats Ronald Reagan in the first Ames Straw Poll in very low turn-out.
1987: Pat Robertson beats eventual nominee G. H. W. Bush who finishes 3rd.
1995: Bob Dole ties Phil Gramm in the Ames Straw Poll and is the first (co-)winner to go on to become the GOP nominee.
1999: G. W. Bush is the first outright winner to go on to become the GOP nominee. Only winner ever {selected} President.
2007: Willard "Mitt" Romney wins, eventual nominee John McCain finishes 10th.
2011: Michele Bachmann wins the straw poll, everybody else now much more excited about their chances.

Average finish of the eventual nominee: 4th, though that's largely skewed by McCain's awful showing.

13. Pawlenty was done a month ago but nobody could find the fork

Just imagine he is the 2nd most popular Minnesotan in the Iowa straw poll.

He won't be able to raise any money. Wall Street Republicans will be going to Romney the Evangelicals will be going to Bachman and the Pschitzoids will be going to PArry.

He simply won't be able to raise money. He probably isn't even in running for Vice President because it is doubtful he can deliver his home state in the general.
