"If FR dies, that’s that." - Jim Robinson

FYI -

Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.

===

"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle And a third is a total replacement Don’t have the financial wherewithal."

"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."

"If FR dies, that’s that."

===

Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.

It’s going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, there’s no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and there’s no guarantees we can cover this quarter’s expenses much less next quarter. We’re on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.

Throwing more money at the problem won’t solve it. was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, we’re not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and he’s pushing 40 now. He built these systems and he’s an expert in them.

And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no we’re not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and that’s for sure. And we don’t have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.

All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get ‘er done!! I’ll bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.

Hit it boys:

https://secure.freerepublic.com/donate/

And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

36. It's a 'false anchor'
The original text (use your browser to see the source) reads

"Oracle (a completely new database system.) And a third ..."

but with square brackets instead of round ones. The DU software converts the square brackets to angle ones, and suddenly it's a HTML anchor of the form "<a blah blah blah>" - which are normally used for hyperlinks, though this is missing the 'href=""' part. So browsers take the text following it as a bit of special text, and highlight it as red when you put your pointer over it, and apply it to everything until the next actual 'anchor', which is an actual hyperlink.

152. I guess they file State-LLC, and Fed-Partnership

Otherwise they would pass-through their LLC to Federal S-Corp and get K-1s for the S-Corp rather than a partnership. You are taxed on business income rather then what you actually receive.

JimRob says he does not get a salary, but takes a draw.

The whole story doesn't make any sense or they have a really shitty accountant.

(Why not shield your business entity federally when your idiotic website discusses national politics?) If I were to sue JimmyRob, it would not be in state court in California. I have seen so many supposedly "protected" LLCs that file a 1065, federally, have that wall of protection between business assets and personal ones dissolved because they commingle funds.

111. Trust. That's obviously a big issue for Mr. Robinson.
I also say Mr. Robinson isn't that much of a patriot, with the Japanese NTT providing his internet connection. DU on the other hand use a local specialist company in Wilmington, DE.

The biggest cost that I can see that a site like FR or DU would have would be bandwidth. FR has the upside here in some respects because it isn't a very bandwidth intensive site. $1200/mo IMO could keep FR or DU ticking over on its own server with "enough" bandwidth.

I'd happily have outsiders help me out with anything technical. Sometimes it is time to step aside and let the specialists in. The phrase goes about "a doctor knows how to operate, a good doctor knows when to operate, a great doctor knows when not to operate." You can say a lot of that about a lot of professions. Mr. Robinson obviously is not a good or great website technician, as FR would have evolved along with the rest of the web. It hasn't.

16. He is insane and this is coming from a 10 year sys admin and database developer.
Yeah large website (not sure FR can be considered large) do take some resources however his estimates are off by a couple magnitudes.

I think this is a case of "I can't figure it out therefore it is impossible". There is nothing unique (that I can see as a non member at least) on the backend of FR that couldn't be replaced by off the self code & database with moderate amount of costs (thousands not millions) and a small amount of customization.

Now the ongoing costs (server hosting, backups, bandwidth) that is outside my area of expertise but the nice thing is they tend to scale well. 10x the people requires 10x the resources but hopefully 10x the donations.

Personally I think he is just a really shitty programmer/developer/admin.

but it can be done for thousands.

I run sites (not in my sig line) that have tens of thousands of members and are pic heavy that require multiple servers. He's just wanting $$ or just plain too stupid or lazy to get a programmer. On his behalf, I will say that finding a reliable programmer isn't as easy as it sounds.

It's more than obvious to me that FR is a source of much of Limbaugh's commentary.....it'd be nice if he waved the financial wand now and again.
He probably does give, but he shouldn't have to carry everybody's water.

67. Like Rush is going to give these blowhards money.
Look, I used to be a right-winger myself, I've never made any attempt whatsoever to hide it. So to my knowledge, the best 'example' of Rush 'giving' anyone some money was to hold a Bake Sale that he advertised for.

Anyone want to see the Free Republic Bake Sale? Maybe we'll finally have a chance to find out exactly what the hell is in their water.

Maybe we could get a Flouride company to promo it. :)

But in all seriousness, I couldn't navigate my way through that place with a site map, a guide, and a head start, let alone make it actually readable. I'm pretty damn certain it takes a certain amount of...special knowledge...to do so.

Find some bootstraps assholes, your Dominican child lover in shining armor isn't going to do jack to help you.

Step 3: Pull.

There are three people that run DU. I don't think they're doing it for the money, but they obviously make enough to live off of. And DU is just such a better site. FR is a piece of crap, hard to navigate, and shitty to look at.

Apparently the free market is telling FR to shove off.

A coworker was reading it all the time. I had no clue what it was but found it totally incoherent to find anything.

Oddly enough almost 15 years later the site has not changed one bit.

How that man spends hundreds of thousands of dollars each year just boggles my mind since it's not on any kind of software updates.

A smart person would re-evaluate those things every year or so to make sure they're not getting screwed over, and its definitely on the customer to pursue better pricing, your ISP isn't going to call you up and say "Hey, how would you like to be paying us 90% less?". Its probably a case somewhat like that.

OK, I just donated $50.
But it's inevitable, Jim. Change will come.

And if you refuse to change the way you manage the servers and software, it will crash and burn.

Now I respect your attitude, but the future of FreeRepublic is more important than any one of us.

I hope you have a change of heart, or find a wealthy “sugar momma”!

134. I started reading in a mirthful mood and then came across this...
just donated..

I’ve been unemployed for 8 months and uneligible for unemployment....

Currently do not even have a place to live...literally homeless...yet, I gave...it was only $5.00 b/c it’s all I have....but I gave....b/c FR is valuable to me....if I ever expect to get a decent job and live in a robust economy I have to keep up w/politics and head these goons in Washington off.... FR helps w/ that...

If I can give, you all can too...just a little...if we all did it would make a difference....

My heart just broke when I read that. I've been in dire financial straits before but at least (thankfully) I had no dependents to worry about. I hope Drew's Mum finds a job and a place for herself and Drew(?) to live.

147. It Awakens...
Apparently all the questions coming from the shit flingers over at the FR cage have Rimjob stirred up enough to actually roll off the couch long enough to post a half baked explanation of how the grift is divided up among the employees @ FR (where there are "no employees," according to what he wrote earlier).

We don’t get a salary, but we do take a draw. All four of us. We have to pay our bills and our taxes and we work at this full time so have no other way to earn a living. None of us are rich. Also, as the owners of Free Republic, LLC, the net income of the LLC flows back to us and we get to pay the taxes and both sides of the FICA on our personal tax returns.

The budget listed is a couple years old. I’ve asked John to update it, but he always seems to have bigger fish to fry. We added Chris to the payroll a couple years ago and his costs are not reflected in the budget. We also spend considerably more in travel than we budgeted and our taxes are much higher than we had listed. Also there are some big one time expenses we’ve had in the last couple of years that we had to borrow for and our payments are not listed. But they are almost paid off. Unless we get sued again or decide to purchase a lot more equipment or have some other large unexpected expenses pop up, I think we’ll be able to reduce our funding requirements starting next quarter.

155. "We don’t get a salary, but we do take a draw. All four of us..."
What utter BS. "Draws" where I worked before are cash advances that are deducted from the next pay period.

How is that not considered a "salary"?

156. Umm...Jim...
first, you're running a discussion board, not the control system for NORAD.

second, if you weren't running the most heavily censored board on the entire internet--to you, 99.99999 percent loyalty is 100 percent disloyalty--you wouldn't need an army of highly paid techs.

and third, you can get Open Source software that would do everything your subscribers want for free.

Maybe your board SHOULD die, especially since it's nothing but a hate site.

To build their dream site. And the day after if comes on line, get knocked off by hackers forever. What do they have over there anyway, buffed up mice turning wheels? Let's see, the 16 year old kid started programming about the time of the commodore computer.
