moving to a new location soon. the moving company offers practically no insurance value for items damaged because their employees chose to play basketball with your mom's china service, or any other damages caused by their direct negligence. They waive all responsibility for that sort of thing. However, ta da, they do offer extra insurance if you want to pay big bucks but your have to pay the insurance rate for the total estimated value of everything in your shipment. You cannot for example, get insurance for only the actual valuable items that are likely to be damaged due to the quality of the hired help. So if you want to insure a $4000 dollar item and your total estimated value is $12000, you have to pay the insurance for the $12000 total. In other words you have to pay 3 times as much as you really need to to cover that valuable item. Of course the moving company says they have no other option than to do things this way. Of course they say that because that way they can break every thing you own and avoid any liability. This is what is known as an industry "accepted practice and standard"
And they wonder why their industry has such a bad reputation. Scammers always have bad reputations. BTW our household insurance covers all items from damage aboard ship or during moving while in transit, such as fire, the ship sinks, water leaks, etc. Household does not not cover negligence on the part of moving company employees. Since it is a free country, except for control by corporations, we are looking into other options.
