Edited on Thu Aug-04-11 10:11 AM by Swede
Edited to add context as suggested (oops). Williams pulled 7 boxes of blue crab from the gulf, and in four of them all crabs were dead.

The original post had absolutely no info as to subject and the only way to view was if you are a FB member. Apparently there are many who mistakenly think an FB post is available to non-members.

46.  But let us hope that's limited simply to children...
I'd hazard many children believe a set of car-key is useless as they are neither acquainted nor versed in its relevance-- perceiving it merely as a toy than jangles and makes noise.

But let us hope that's limited simply to children... in adults it's simply petulance.

"We caught at least 7 boxes of Blue Crabs today and 4 Boxes were all dead along with any fish we seen in the water today.Floating dead Flounders,Black Drum,String rays, cat fish, gasping for air and then they would die."

Apparently he's upset they were killed before he got to do it?

14. OF COURSE WE REMEMBER
I just don't see much difference for those crabs and fish - either they were killed by oil or they'd suffocate in fishing nets while we overfish and kill the oceans in a different way. To them it's the same result, and for us it's disastrous either way. Sorry, not a lot of sympathy for fishermen.

Or we can see I have more empathy with those being killed
than those doing the killing.

Stating that I want the fishermen to die is just ridiculous. I just think they should find another line of work.

But as another poster said here, enjoy your poutrage. Yelling at me and assigning fictional, laughable claims to me does nothing to change my opinion or help the gulf recover.

Fishermen have been killing our oceans for a long time and now they're upset someone else beat them to it. And all for a "food" product that is contaminated and makes people sick.

56. They are both destroying the oceans and killing indiscriminately
Obviously BP did it much quicker and in a more concentrated area, but both are extremely harmful. Despite the reactions here, this is not a new or shocking idea. Scientific and environmental organizations have been saying this for years. Here's what National Geographic has to say about it:

http://ocean.nationalgeographic.com/ocean/critical-issues-overfishing/

... Faced with the collapse of large-fish populations, commercial fleets are going deeper in the ocean and father down the food chain for viable catches. This so-called "fishing down" is triggering a chain reaction that is upsetting the ancient and delicate balance of the sea's biologic system.

A study of catch data published in 2006 in the journal Science grimly predicted that if fishing rates continue apace, all the world's fisheries will have collapsed by the year 2048.

...

Many scientists say most fish populations could be restored with aggressive fisheries management, better enforcement of laws governing catches, and increased use of aquaculture. And in many regions, there is reason for hope. But illegal fishing and unsustainable harvesting still plagues the industry. And a public grown accustomed to abundant seafood and largely apathetic about the plight of the oceans complicates efforts to repair the damage we've done.

41. I guess you are a vegan. I support your right to choose but I like seafood
and a lot of sea creatures like seafood as well. If the native predators can't find enough to eat and many of the "food" items are dying off then I'd say "nature" is taking a hit whether I have a crab or two or not. What do you think? Are you going to enjoy all of the "dead zones"?

44. Then you and I agree on that.
Of course I won't "enjoy" the dead zones. I just have more empathy with the animals who are suffocating to death - whether from oil or fishing, and the resulting ecological disaster humans have created, than for people who want to kill and eat the animals when we don't need to. You're right, the sea creatures who eat other sea creatures NEED that food and nature is taking a hit. That's part of what I was saying, though I said it in a way that upset some of the more excitable posters.

I will never, ever, ever forget the Gulf "Oil Gusher" nor the tons of toxic and lethal Corexit which was unnecessarily dumped into the Gulf to cover up the extent of the damage. It was the worst environmental crime in the USA at the time, and predictably, the US government did nothing about it.

Take an ecosystem already stressed by one pollution problem, then add another and the results can't be positive.

39. It is. But the zone is not as big as expected.
The Mississippi flooding this year was expected to produce a larger dead zone. That said, the problem is still significant.

http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2011/08/tropical-storm-blunts-gulf-of.html

There's nothing to indicate that the spill last year is responsible for any of the otherwise regular oxygen deprivation cycles in the gulf. But that fact won't stop the hysterical speculation.

30. those photos were devastating. looks like hypoxic zone

looks like it was in a hypoxic (low oxygen) zone that worsens in summer due to excessive nutrient runoff that enters the Mississippi river. It's creates algae blooms that suck the oxygen out of the water. When the algae dies, bacteria that break it down keep using the oxygen up. It's also been bad at the Chesapeake Bay this year. :(
