Afghans Rage at Young Lovers; a Father Says Kill Them Both

It was the beginning of an Afghan love story that flouted dominant traditions of arranged marriages and close family scrutiny, a romance between two teenagers of different ethnicities that tested a village’s tolerance for more modern whims of the heart. The results were delivered with brutal speed.

---------------

The riot, which lasted for hours, ended with one man dead, a police station charred and the two teenagers, Halima Mohammedi and her boyfriend, Rafi Mohammed, confined to juvenile prison. Officially, their fates lie in the hands of an unsteady legal system. But they face harsher judgments of family and community.

Ms. Mohammedi’s uncle visited her in jail to say she had shamed the family, and promised that they would kill her once she was released. Her father, an illiterate laborer who works in Iran, sorrowfully concurred. He cried during two visits to the jail, saying almost nothing to his daughter. Blood, he said, was perhaps the only way out.

“What we would ask is that the government should kill both of them,” said the father, Kher Mohammed.

The teenagers, embarrassed to talk about love, said plainly that they were ready for death. But they were baffled by why they should have to be killed.

1. All this energy wasted on whipping ourselves up into a frenzy over nothing
when there are real problems to solve. Humans are frustrating.

3. Not sure what you mean
or what you thought I meant. I meant the riot over two teenagers and the plan to kill them is whipping people into a frenzy over nothing.

As opposed to real problems like poverty, climate change, etc.

4. Cultures and their darker sides, eh? Like Phoenix.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43935718/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/t/girl-found-suffocated-was-locked-box-punishment/

Four adult relatives of an Arizona girl found suffocated in a storage bin have been arrested after investigators determined she was locked in the container as punishment for taking a popsicle without permission.

He said that when Ame was first caught, the Allens forced her to perform exercises, such as jumping jacks, running in circles and back bends, for over an hour. They then ordered her to climb in the storage chest before locking it with a padlock. She was found dead the next morning, apparently having suffocated.

Police said the child was 4 feet, 2 inches tall and weighed just 59 pounds. The box she was locked in was less than 3 feet long, 14 inches wide and about a foot deep.

The girl was very dirty and wearing soiled clothes when found, with marks on her right knee apparently from "forceful contact with the interior lid," investigators reported.

6. Yep. And in both cases we CAN do something about it, but do not WANT to.

9. Like what?
I'm open to suggestions. We can't even control the rednecks in our country, I doubt we can control them in Afghanistan, and any education program has to deal with the fact that people who act this way, here and there, are sure they are right and are the ones who are educated. Short of a Stalinist type program, I don't know how to eradicate such ingrained horrors. Kids are property, here and there--even if people get upset about different things. Heck, read the thread from the other day about kids in IHops. Even on DU kids are just little pieces of animated property, they aren't humans.

7. The Difference, Sir, Is These People Are Charged With Murder
In the other, every cultural signal flashes approval of the impending killing.

8. Not so.
They had to riot against security forces and burn a police station.

10. When The Men Threatening To Kill Them Are Under Arrest, Sir
And the participants in the riot under loick and key and facing felony charges, then you might have a point to press. Until then, you have nothing but the most knee-jerk clap-trap.
