John Boehner needs 216 votes to pass his debt limit plan through the House. An examination of public statements and calls to Congressional offices by ThinkProgress reveal that 25 Republicans already oppose the plan. Since there are 240 Republican members of the House, if these positions hold, there are only 215 Republican votes available, and the bill would fail without Democratic support. 1. It needs to fail

If it fails, then we have more leverage to get Reid's plan passed which, though not perfect, is a shade better and prevents us from having to worry about this next year. I don't know why the Republicans are so gung-ho about going through all this high drama again next year. It has about the same potential to hurt them as it does us and may even be worse for them given that their Presidential candidate will have to weigh in on the matter as well. Another attempt- within/under a year by the Tea Party Hobbits to to hold the country "hostage" to their unreasonable demands likely isn't going to go over well IMHO (not that they've cared about it so far but still.....). :shrug:

3. Neither of those bills will pass

It is sad to see the democrats and repubs each doing their thing with the August 2nd deadline approaching.

4. It will have to end up being a merged bill

and Boehner will need Democrats to help get something through the House.

5. The Democrats are doing America's thing on this one

Only one side has bent over backward (too far backward in my opinion) to make a deal happen. Republicans created this crisis in the first place by refusing to do what they routinely did under Bush and every President before him, allow a straight up or down vote on a clean bill - which most Republicans then support.

The Republican blackmail position would be terrible for this country. We don't need another round of all this faux drama in 6 months and we can't return spending to 1959 levels.

2. Bipartison failure.

Boehner did bring democrats and republicans together . . . just not for the same reason.
