City bans sale, possession of high-powered laser pointers

OCEAN CITY — City Council on Thursday banned the sale or possession of high-powered laser pointers after several purchased on the Boardwalk were aimed at passing aircraft.

Council decided not to wait for state lawmakers to take action after the Federal Aviation Administration warned that these novelty devices were being directed at passing planes, particularly in the skies around Ocean City.

Merchants who sell the novelty products — which typically emit a bright-green light — are subject to fines of as much as $500. Residents and visitors, too, face similar fines if police observe them in their possession.
Subsequent offenses carry penalties up to $1,000.
