May Cable News Ratings: Fox News Gets Stomped
Posted by Mark on June 1, 2011 at 8:29 pm.

Ratings for cable news for the month of May 2011, bring bad news for Fox News. In the key demographic group of 25-54 year-olds, Fox was alone in declining during the primetime hours.

This was a really bad month for Fox News which lost viewers in the demo for every primetime show. Bill O’Reilly dropped 9%, Sean Hannity dropped 6%, and Greta Van Susteren dropped 12%. These declines occurred while almost every primetime program for both CNN and MSNBC gained by double digits. The only good news for Fox is that Glenn Beck, which sunk 17% in the demo, has already been canceled so he can’t do too much more harm.

An interesting wrinkle in this book is that MSNBC was also the number one cable news network among 18-34 year-olds in primetime, with a 7% advantage over CNN and a 14% lead over Fox News. That is not a demo that gets much attention from an advertising point of view, but it signals an opportunity for future growth that the network can exploit. It also affirms the weakness of Fox among young viewers. That explains why Beck is so openly hostile to young people.

5. Marta and I are in there

We just made the 25-54 age group. We had our diaries from the Thursday before bin Laden was killed to the following Thursday. I was home sick so I helped MSNBC the entire week we were keeping track in our diaries.

K&R!

6. add in hannity and limpballs ratings decline and you have..
a big drop in ad revenue for the right wing media. advertisers will want lower rates from fox and ccn and msnbc will be able raise their rates.

beck could just barely sell tickets to his tours when he had big ratings. miller`s sexy liberal tour is breaking box office records.

maybe advertisers and station owners will realize liberals buy soap.

7. This is the kind of news I love to read with my morning coffee
A couple three weeks ago I was at the VA and not one of the televisions were tuned to fox where previously every one of them had been. People are starting to wake up to the propaganda machine that fox noise is.
18 more days until we have KO again. YEAH thats something I can wrap my old hands around.

8. FAUX viewers, some of them, are beginning to realize that no matter how much fun it is
to have one's prejudices and world-view echoed by the FAUX bobbleheads, it's no substitution for the news.

10. Good trend...
keep in mind that FNC had a HUGE lead to start with - top 8 of 10 programs in the 25-54 demographic, and the top 12 cable news programs overall.

17. Yeah, FOX news still has a huge lead, unfortunately. It just really bothers me that
so many in the population believe the lies that Fox news propogates. It's hard to have a conversation with someone who watches FOX news about current events. For example, my father, who is in his late 70s and a very devoted Glenn Beck fan (Dad is disappointed he is off FOX now) STILL believes there were weapons of mass destruction including nukes in Iraq. He also believes Iraq and Saddam were behind 9/11.

How do you have a rational conversation with people who believe these lies? It's impossible. It's like trying to talk to someone who believes every word in "Pravda."

I'm encouraged a bit by these trends, and by the fact that the average FOX viewer is over 65 (and they are picking up only a minority of younger viewers) but we still have a very long ways to go in getting people to see, FOX news lies.

12. Hmmm...
People waking up to the lies and hate? Thanks again, Paul Ryan. The demographic catered to by Faux isn't buying it any more. (Nor gold.)

13. I'm baffled as to why Faux was considered a "news" organization.

They've never even closely resembled a news organization before.

14. 18-34 is a huge advertising market, do not kid yourself
that is an age when individuals have THE MOST disposable income until they start a family. That demographic is the target of ALL of the automotive manufacturers and the aftermarket parts industry. Soft Drinks, clothes, electronics, how often do you see a grey haired individual in GQ advertisements??????
